New Meeting: A Tune For June

From: Mark
Sent on: Wednesday, May 28, 2008 1:16 AM
Sorry for the late notice on this one! As usual, we'll get together to sing and make music on the first (and third) Saturday of the month.

Announcing a new meeting for The DC Area Folk SOJO (Sing Out Jam Out)!

What: A Tune For June

When: Saturday, June 7, 2:00 PM

Meeting fee: USD4.00 per person

Where: (A location for this meeting hasn't been chosen yet)

Who should come: Anyone and everyone who likes to sing and/or play folk music.

Why: Music. Air Conditioning. Singing. Air Conditioning. Good People. Fun. Did I mention Air Conditioning?

Meeting Description: Can it really be June already? The 7th is the first Saturday in June. Come and sing. If you play an instrument, come, play, and sing. All skill levels are welcome.

Welcome June with a song. Celebrate, if you want, some of the notable events of June 7th, such as the first flight of the Boeing 777 in 1995, the opening of Graceland to the public in 1982, the birth of Tom Jones in 1940, the founding of the Steel Workers Organizing Committee in 1936, the crowning of King Louis XIV of France in 1654, or the death of Robert the Bruce in 1329. Or celebrate something else, or nothing at all - the choice is yours.

Most of the songs we sing come from the book "Rise Up Singing". We generally have loaner copies available for a one-time loan to newcomers. Someone usually has copies available for sale as well, or you can buy them online. We also have a notebook full of other songs, or you can bring in copies of a song you'd like to share. If you'd rather not pick a song to sing, that's OK too.

Meetup says we should have an agenda. So here is one.

2:00 - 3:30: Sing and play music
3:30 - 3:40: Rest voices and fingers
3:40 - 5:00: Sing and play more music

Our real agenda is to enjoy making music together. We make music from 2:00 to 5:00 with a break around 3:30. We?re not nearly as formal as the agenda above might imply.

Please try to show by, or even a bit before, 2:00. If you are driving, remember to allow time to park and walk to Crystal Plaza Apartments. (There are several garages within a couple of blocks of Crystal Plaza Apartments which offer free parking on weekends, most of which enter off of Crystal Drive. The meters in front of the building do operate on Saturdays, and they are patrolled and checked, so it is best not to park there.)

We ask for an optional donation of $4, or whatever you can afford, to help us defray the cost of renting the room we meet in. Don't worry if you can't afford it - you're still welcome, you won't be turned away.
