Las Velas Mexican Restaurant

After writing up a visit to the Franklin Inn for FoodBurgh, it occurred to me that it's been a long time since I've been to any other Mexican establishments in the area. In fact, there are some that I haven't ever made it out to. Of the untested list, Las Velas is really the newest.

I'm setting this one up for March 16--St Patrick's Eve, if you will. So far, I've heard good things about Las Velas, and suspect that we'll run into some excellent, authentic Mexican cuisine. With any luck, our resident Mexican expert (Pablo) will be able to make it out and confirm.

Being a native of northwest Mexico, and considering it is hard to come up with authentic mexican food in Pittsburgh, Las Velas (“the candles” or “the sails”) has as many pluses as unfortunate minuses. They did a good job at representing mexican food in its menu, and compared to other mexican places in Pittsburgh they execute quite well. It is likely to be pleased with their food. However, some important details missing in their cooking would easily be noticeable by any mexican. To mention a couple, mole was not rich, making mole poblano appear dry, and chilaquiles had their tortillas somewhat soaked (these are easy mistakes to avoid). Also, on the sides, while rice was reasonably mexican, their potatoes and beans were not tasteful. Las Velas may be good for a lunch, but if they don't improve, they are likely to be outmatched by their competition.
