This is one of the last events of the Calusa Blueway Paddling Festival. For those loving a challenge or a different spin on the usual paddle, this one is a race with two classes: recreational and competitive. The recreational paddle is 4 miles and the competitive is 10 miles. Within each class are age categories for the different kinds of boats, including canoes. There is a fee of $20 per paddler if registered before 10/31 or $25 race day. Check in is at 7:30 am and the race starts at 9:00. Even if you don't think you want to race, it may be fun to watch or just paddle along at your own pace. A t-shirt is included as long as supplies last. Don't feel as if you need to race...you can just paddle without entering and enjoy the festivities. Or rent a tandem and race with a friend. Besides, the racers need a cheering section!
If you need to rent, Gulf Coast Kayak Rentals is just before the entrance to the park on the right side. It's the first driveway on the right after the drawbridge in back of Olde Fishhouse Marina.
You may want to call ahead and reserve since I'm not sure how many people will be there for this event.
(239) 283-1125 You can then just paddle under the bridge to the park where the festivities start.
Afterwards, it has been a tradition to go to Bert's for the telling of tales and photo ops!
Don't forget sunscreen, bug spray, a snack, and water.
