Full Moon Friday - Let's Paddle

We will meet at the Sanibel Flats as it is called and depending on the conditions may paddle to Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel Causeway or Picnic Island and have a snack, then head back. Bring a little something to share.

This will mostly be an open water type trip. PFD's are required.

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR BOAT IS WELL LIGHTED. A bow and stern light is preferred so you can be seen from the front and back.

Moon Rises at 6:48 pm
Sun Sets at 6:56 pm
Full Moon is at 7:37 pm

Tides are favorable.

It should be a great evening!!

Great trip, I enjoyed it the most, since I took a wrong turn in the dark and headed to Fort Myers beach. I got attracted to the loud music coming from the lani-kai hotel, (It was hopping over there) Then Darlene called (Where are you) Temporally lost. So as a good Angel Darlene is, she showed me the light. and as a good Christian I followed it until I reached the tribe.

Weather was perfect, people were great. Moon was bright and beautiful, great paddle conditions. We lost one paddler but in the end he returned unharmed. Tired but unharmed. Great to see some familiar faces and some new ones too.

Is that partial eclipse of the moon on Friday?

    October 16, 2013

    • Anne D.

It looks like it! Friday, October 18

Full Moon. A slight penumbral eclipse of the Moon will be detectable this evening by careful Moon-watchers in the eastern half of North America. The Moon will be deepest in the pale outer fringe (penumbra) of Earth's shadow around 7:50 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. Some unusual shading on the Moon's south-southeastern side should be fairly plain to see. Subtler traces of the penumbral shading may be visible for almost an hour before and after that time.

I just got back to town last week. How are the bugs where we're launching and going?

    October 17, 2013

    • Darlene

Hopefully not too bad. But ya never know. Let's wish for a nice little breeze. Bring you bug spray.

I have not achieved my short term goal of purchasing a kayak yet. How does one participate in this group w/o one?

    October 13, 2013

    • Darlene

Mark, there are rentals at some of the locations for the different trips we post. This trip however, does NOT have rentals although, if you can transport a kayak you can rent from some of the kayak shops like Estero River. Or other places might deliver for a fee. You will have to check with shop.

What is your experience level? What kind of a boat are you looking for?

      October 16, 2013

  • Jeff Z

Darlene, They have put (no parking signs) along the road. But people are still parking on the beach, I did it myself today. It seems that the sign are for people that park to close to the road. Why would they place garbage cans on the beach, if they don't want anyone parking there.

Not been there before. What's the difficulty and length of time out?

    October 14, 2013

    • Darlene

We will probably be out 3-4 hours. It is very hard to judge the difficulty because it all depends on the conditions that day. If there is no wind the water may be smooth as glass and it would be very easy. BUT there could also be wind and waves which would make it a difficult paddle. We won't really know until we get there. Always be prepared for the unexpected when it comes to open water paddles.

What lighting would you recommend for the kayak?

      thanx janet good one

      October 14, 2013

    • Darlene

I agree with Janet, you don't have to buy specific lights. Wal-Mart has some nice reusable battery powered glow sticks that are pretty bright. OR if you put a flashlight in a plastic, white or opaque container (liquid coffee creamer bottle works well) it will make a nice 360° light that you can bungie on to your boat. Or battery operated holiday lights strung on your boat. Be creative! :-) Anything that makes you visible.

We went over to check out the meeting place and there were no parking signs. Where do we park? And can you give me an example of an appropriate snack to share?
