Orange River and Down River

One more visit with the manatees while they may still be congregating near the power plant. We'll launch from Manatee Park ($5 parking fee) and check out the manatees there. Then we will head down river toward the Caloosahatchee and explore some of the creeks there near the mouth of the Orange River. This paddle will be fine for all paddlers.

How will i find everyone? Is there a certain point in the park where everyone will meet to launch, or is there only one option?

    February 15, 2014

    • Jerry C.

There are signs to the Kayak Launch, someone should be there to help. Parking is all over. This park becomes very busy with snowbirds but normally after 10

Just remember to reserve a kayak, call[masked] or www.calusabluewayoutfitters.com. You'll need sunblock, hat, shorts, t shirt or bathing suit sandles. PFD and paddle, unless you are renting, then I suppose they provide paddle and pfd. But if you have a paddle you are used to, take it. Lighter paddle is always better. I don't know if you can rent on Sunday, but I'd reserve one. Parking is $1.00 per hour or $5.00 for all day. All this stuff takes time, so get there early. We want to be on the water by 9:00.
Now all we have to do is have fun. We will probably be done and back by 1:00 pm. Then we eat if you'd like to join us. We'll eat at Fats at exit 131. Unless someone know of a better place.

Is anyone heading up from down by Naples or Port of the islands that Can Tote a kayak with them? If not, maybe I could rent one there

I will try. It sounds doable with revision. Hear that Anthony P?

Are any shorter paddles planned in the near future?

    February 8, 2014

    • Deborah G W.

Linda, please come. It will be fine.

Linda, Just Do It. We will look after you & make sure you don't get eaten by a Manatee. Just don't bring any lettuce to feed them, the Park Service frowns on that.

    Question:
Is this an appropriate trip for a novice kayaker, been out twice on my kayak for about 1 1/2 hours? In pretty good shape overall.

Jerry Thanks for your input, will consider further. Tony

So Anthony, after re-thinking things, this paddle will be fine for you. Please reconsider and come along.

      February 13, 2014

  • Deborah G W.

REVISED--this trip will not be as long as I thought it would be and will be appropriate for ALL paddlers. So come one, come all, and let's have a good time!

Looking forward to this kayak trip but need to rent a Kayak. I know they have them at Manatee Prk. Is it wise to reserve one before hand, and if I do, what lenght is advisable? Thanks

    February 13, 2014

    • Deborah G W.

Hello Scott. Glad you will be joining us. The rental kayaks are "one size fits all" and will be fine. You can call[masked] if you want to reserve one. www.calusabluewayoutfitters.com

I was hoping and had planned to join you on Sunday, however a conflict came up and regrettably I will not be able to paddle on this trip. Have fun!

Oh nuts..while I loved kayaking to the sea caves of Lake Superior, which was a good challenge, I haven't kayaked for a while and need to pass now seeing your clarification.

    February 9, 2014

  • Deborah G W.

Hello Anthony, I would classify this as an intermediate paddle where paddlers should be able to sustain speed of 3.5 average for 3-4 hours. Along the route, there is no place to get out of your boat for a rest.

I may or not go. I,m in an art fair Sat.
