Let's camp out on a full moon on picnic island.

On the 17th of November is a full moon known as the Beaver moon. The beaver starts its hibernation. It’s the time to get ready for winters; this is the last productive full moon of the year. That’s good if you live in a cold State.

But here in Florida, it’s time for the beaver to come alive and wake up and moving around. Don’t let your beaver fall asleep. We have places to see and things to do.
So let’s paddle, and camp out. Why just watch the moon come up, and then paddle back home.
Why can’t we stay out all night and camp out. Watch the moon by the sea side? Listen to the wave break on shore. Start a fire, tell stories. Have a little wine, sing a song. Bring your Kayaks, your Hobies, and canoes,
Let’s have a good time. Let’s camp out on Picnic Island.
would like some postive feedback.

Regardless of who organizes and posts an event, when you
take part you alone are responsible for your safety. Kayaking can be dangerous.
You paddle at your own risk. Safety is your responsibility. It’s also your
responsible to wear a Life Vest (PFD)

I had such a great time because you're such a great group of people. The waves were a little challenging but to me it made it more interesting.
I woke up early Sunday morning and took a walk on the beach. The waves had been strong enough that I found 6 horseshoe crabs upside down on the beach. I flipped them over with my toe, because I'm not able to make myself touch a live crab. Maybe next trip.

This was my first camping trip in 20 years and it was excellent. Great venue, great people. and a good time was had by all. The paddle was a little challenging for someone new, like me, due to the wind and tides but I still had a GREAT time.

    Hi,
Looking forward to taking my brand new kayak out on the water. I'm still working full time but going to take advantage of weekend outings on the water. Anxious to meeting others who enjoy the outdoors. Sorry to see that there aren't any day trips planned.

The weather gods have conspired against us! Maybe next couple of weekends would be better, and more likely to have a full moon...

So sorry, but we've decided not to join you this weekend. Rotator cuff surgery 4 months ago makes me skittish about a strong paddle r8ight now. Have a wonderful time, and we'll catch up with you all on the next trip.

      November 16, 2012

And I will be going back home on Sat, so you will have company.

    November 16, 2012

Thanks Jean. Appreciate your reply. We're on the river and it's windy and probably 2.5 foot seas right now. Still ready to go, but will make a final decision as we get closer to departure time.

I am new to this group....this meetup campout on a full moon sounds wonderful. I was wondering do I need my own Kayak...FYI: I have never been kayaking but it is something I long to do. I have spent alot of time on a canoe. Also, do I need a tent? Do they have cabins there? Inquiring minds must know...thank you in advance for the help!

    November 15, 2012

Yes you'll need a kayak and you can rent one at the marina.

Hi Jean, this is Fran and I was the one that was going to try and meet up with you tomorrow evening after work. However I injured my eye and will not be going into work tomorrow so I'll be leaving with the group. Thank you for your consideration and willing to wait for. See you tomorrow at the camp out.

    November 15, 2012

My calendar says the full moon isn't until the 28th... The new moon is on the 13th, my birthday, so I should know! In other words, it will be very dark, great for star-gazing anyway. Happy fall back day!

Fran-are you the one that can't get away until 4? I am planning on leaving the dock after 4 pm and would welcome the company. Let me know and I will wait 4 u.

NO. real wood. I found mine at the publix in Fort Myers. I guess not all publix carry it. my pubix is at South point blvd and college rd.
If you Like i will pick some up for you.

    November 15, 2012

    • Linda W.

Publix at Santa Barbara Blvd & Cape Coral Pkway has it also outside the entrance.

      November 15, 2012

  • Jeff Z

I think 2 sacks, at 5.96 each should be enough. we don't want to sink the boat or overload it. :-)

    November 15, 2012

  • Jeff Z

Yes, bring a small table. I'm trying to find a small table myself, its nicer to have food on a table then the ground.
Darlene, the grill was shipped yesterday. should be here by tomorrow, 2 day shipping.

    November 14, 2012

  • Jeff Z

Don't forget to bring a chair, and toiletries. Remember this is a primitive island. Where going to bond with nature. let's enjoy ourself.

    November 13, 2012

    • Darlene

Karen, tables are VERY useful to have. If anyone has small tables they should bring them.

      November 14, 2012

    • Karen D.

Great, will do if sag boat will carry!

      November 14, 2012

  • Joy M.

We are excited about the camp out and the weather looks great!

    November 13, 2012

  • Jeff Z

FYI, all is in place. the captain will have a boat ready for us to load up our stuff. They will show up at the island after we have landed. I will have a marine radio to keep in touch with the marina. we have plenty of wood, bring your coolers. with what ever you want to drink;-) I will do the same:-) and also plenty of fresh water, will be out there for 2 1/2 day. , I don't own a guitar or do i play one. So i will bring a radio.

    November 13, 2012

  • Darlene

Is anyone bringing some sort of grill to cook over the fire with? One of these is on my wish list, http://www.amazon.com/Perfect-CampfireGrill-Pioneer-18-Inch-Diameter/dp/B000NQ5VKU/ref=pd_sbs_sg_1/190-5011073-0069136

  • Karen D.

I will pony up $15 to have some comfort..my kayak is tiny, so, great!

    November 13, 2012

  • Jeff Z

from the Port Sanibel Marina, its about 2 1/2 nautical miles at 270* west. or 26*29'20.27"N--82*02'58.56"W

    November 12, 2012

  • Jeff Z

we can meet at port sanibel marina, anytime between 1:30 and 2:30p we can have the boat leave the dock 3:30 or 4pm this will give use a chance to get to the island first. then the boat can meet us there. wood can be purchased at publix supermarket.

    November 12, 2012

  • Jean W.

I will not be able to get to the marina much before 4 on Fri-that "W" word. Is anyone else going to be going over that late? I will have extra room for wood if you want to leave some for me to take.

Jeff Z, thank you thank you, I like your idea to arrange transportation of our gear. I can be at the marina as early as 12:00 pm.

    November 12, 2012

  • Jeff Z

I purchased 2 sacks of wood myself.

    November 12, 2012

  • Faith and Steve W.

Jeff, The transport sounds fantastic, thanks so much for arranging it. Steve and I are only staying Friday night due to previous commitments for Saturday, so we can't take advantage of this great "SAG" boat. if we were weekending, it sure would be worth the cost to have all the stuff delivered. Looking forward to seeing everyone there.

    November 12, 2012

  • Darlene

I'm fine with loading my stuff in my kayak. It is good practice for my trip next weekend. I will bring wood that will need to be brought out though.

    November 12, 2012

  • Jeff Z

I need input on this; I spoke with the manager of the Port Sanibel Marina. We have The Possibility of getting our equipment to the island on Friday and back on Sunday. We wouldn’t have to load up our kayaks with wood, all the pots & pans, plus tents, sleeping bag, lanterns, etc. The manager of the marina, made the kayaking group a great deal. They will transport all our equipment to and from the island; this includes the parking and launching of the kayaks at the marina, all for $15.00 per person. All we have to do is kayak to the island and back. All our stuff will be pickup from the island on Sunday and brought back to the marina. Question is what time on Friday can we all meet??? Please, those that are planning to attend, we need your input.

    November 12, 2012

    • Linda W.

I have not commited yet but I might be more interested if I didn't have to haul my equipment to and from. It sounds like a good deal to me! I am flexible on Friday.

      November 12, 2012

  • Linda W.

Is anyone going to kayak over but not camp?

    November 12, 2012

Hey, sounds great, but heading out of town.....anyone ging to Bass Pro Shop Thurs with Alligators?

    November 11, 2012

Im so excited,,, i bought a Kayak !! Cant wait to put some miles on it. Planning to go to Lovers Key Sunday 11/11 morning to try things out. If anyone would like join me that would be wonderful.

If Terry or anyone else needs to rent kayak for full moon paddle on 11/16, a location that gives great rates is Crazy Woman Kayak on FtMyers Beach. Wkend special is $95 [masked] Only mentioning this because of its closeness to your launch location of Port Sanibel.

I just collected a box of good dry kindling that I will bring on the back of my boat. I have lots of firewood if we think we will need it, I can put some in the car if anyone has space to bring it out to the island.

    November 3, 2012

  • Faith and Steve W.

Steve and I are so looking forward to the trip. we live near Punta Rassa could we meet up en route? Need more info about times etc

    November 2, 2012

  • Emily

Love to camp, I'll be there.

    October 20, 2012

  • Fran

I would love to join you on this camping trip, but my biggest challenge is getting a kayak to and from the location. I own a small 2 passenger convertible car, if someone could or would transport my kayak I would pay them for their gas and troubles. Thanks, Fran.

    October 19, 2012

  • Micki S.

This sounds like a wonderful way to try camping for the first time.

    October 17, 2012

    • Darlene

Yes Micke, this is an ideal "Kayak Camping" trip for a first timer since it is not too far away, less than 2 miles. Loading all your gear for camping into your kayak, planing food and what to bring is challenging so the short paddle makes it ideal. I hope more decide to join us.

      October 18, 2012

  • Micki S.

Let me know if anyone else just wants to paddle out, stay for the afternoon and paddle back.

    October 17, 2012

  • Jean W.

I will have to think about this. I would have to come back on Sat as I have people to pick up at the airport on Sunday. If anyone else is just going out for one night let me know.

    October 16, 2012

  • Jeff Z

I will speak to charlies Heath, Mgr. Tomorrow Morning. Yes i'm hoping to leave from there. its a shorter trip to the island. Then from anywhere else. I haven't had a problem parking there all day for $5.00 and that allows me to wash down my kayak at the end of the day. Will FYI tomorrow.
