How Meetup does customer development & super low-cost usability testing

The first rule of customer development is to get out of the building. Usability testing as part of an iterative development process can be one of the most powerful and humbling ways to get customer feedback. It can also be done at super low cost if you are willing to throw out conventional wisdom. Andres Glusman VP of Strategy & Community at Meetup will share how Meetup does low cost usability testing multiple times a week and how that fits into their other customer development initiatives. See Clay Shirky guest for reference on how Meetup does usability

I got there a bit late, but the event started a bit late, so it worked out perfectly (15 minutes). There were no technical issues, the seating was sufficient, and the space had a good atmosphere.

The presentation was very strongly delivered with a good mix of anecdotal data and the theory behind best practices. Metrics were not available for the success of Usability testing, but all of the thoughts around its value were discussed in depth by the presenters and the Meetup. Audience participation was a good mix of suggestions, helpful advice and genuine questions - but because of the interest in the topic, we only had 25-30 minutes to mingle at the end of the discussion. The people I met were interesting, friendly and potentially great work-mates. I highly recommend this Meetup and thoroughly enjoyed this event.

Andres has slides and video and he may be posting one or both of them - I recommend you keep them for your notes as they are densely packed with useful information.

Meetup shared their secret sauce to usability testing - providing a great general framework for getting the most value out of usability testing while keeping costs to a minimum. Thanks to Kareem for organizing, and Andres and Anna for excellent presentation!

Tonight was my first NYC Lean Startup meetup and I was very pleased. Andres' and Anna's presentations were insightful, provoked great discussion, and I am looking forward to meeting with this group again.
