How to implement a 3D engine in HTML5

  • March 1, 2012 · 6:00 PM

Web vise, 2012 seems to be the year of device APIs arriving to the HTML5 scene. We start to see more and more hardware access in browsers and more and more exiting stuff happening on the game development area. So what's more appropriate then a game development related meet-up then?

How to implement a 3D engine in HTML5
Marius Gundersen has been tinkering with web technologies for almost a decade, starting with Flash, but recently focusing on HTML5 and CSS3. In his free time he enjoys getting technology to do things it was never designed to do, for example making a 3D engine in the 2D canvas context.

Marius will give a presentation on how to implement a 3D engine in HTML5 using only the Canvas2D API. The talk will present several 3D engines, each building on the previous one, starting from absolute scratch until a polygon engine with textures and shading is implemented. Each step will have an explanation of the mathematics and the JavaScript source code needed to implement it.

The presentation will be in English.

The Web Rebels Conference
We guess you all know about our conference which will take place at Soria Moria on Torshov the 24th - 25th of May by now so just a quick update:

The Early Rebel tickets went on sale almost two weeks ago and boy did they go fast! All Early Rebel tickets was sold out in about 1 minute!

So, the next batch of tickets will go on sale this Friday (24th of February) at 15:00 so be ready to order. It's a small conference with an awesome schedule!

Talking about schedule, these days we are working hard on booking the last speakers. Six more speakers are to be confirmed within the next couple of weeks so stay tuned. Our latest confirmed speaker is mobile guru Nikolai Onken which will bring the absurdness of the Bikeshed Project to the Web Rebels Conference!

And, for those eager to learn game / WebGL development we can confirm that our conference sponsor, Opera Software, will throw a full day game and WebGL Code Camp on the 26th of May as a hangover retreat to Web Rebels!

A new and steady meet-up location?
For this meet-up we are exited to invite you all to a new location we hope will be a more steady location for our meet-ups in the future. Out of the "start-up community" Mesh has been born and we have been welcomed with open arms to host our meet-ups in their facilities.

Mesh is a new concept that accelerates innovation and entrepreneurship through a mix of physical and virtual spaces. Mesh wants to create positive noise and modernize the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Norway. The first Mesh work space for entrepreneurs and innovators opened in Oslo on February 1st.

Mesh does sadly not have the bar / café ready yet so lets head over to Amundsen after the talk for beers and social gathering.
