Les Compagnons started as the French Version of Toastmasters Club in 1970. It used to meet at St. John's Church, in front of the White House, on Thursday evenings. We carried on this tradition, to date, and it makes us the oldest and the only weekly French Meetup in Washington DC.
We love French and French Culture. We are friendly and fun loving Francophiles. We have a faux Constitutional Monarchy and every leadership team has got a nick name:) Make sure to meet La Dictatrice, Le Dictateur, Le Co-Dictateur, Ministre de Publicite, La Première Dame, Monsieur le Dictionnaire, Ministre de l'Agriculture and Le Sous-dictateur/le Sommelier. If you want to get a nick name; stick with us, show-up on every event and give a hand.
Our purpose is to help people with an interest in French language and culture connect with one another, both online and in person. Membership is FREE and we're open to all levels of French language from zero to native fluency.
Unless and otherwise it is indicated in the Event, our prime location is : 1920 G St. NW, Washington DC.
1) Arriving by Metro: The closest metro stations are Farragut North and Farragut West. Foggy Bottom is also an option. The school entrance is at the end of the parking lot beside the United Church at the corner of 20th & G Street, NW.
2)Arriving by car: Please note that the parking lot is only for the church members. However, there is public parking close to the church. The least expensive option for parking is the Marvin Center Garage (http://www.gwu.edu/~p...) . It's located between 22nd & 21st Streets and cost only $8.00 after 6:00pm.
In order to help you practice French, we created different events :
1. Weekly Meetup :
Share a glass of wine with lively and intelligent French conversation from 6-7 pm Thursdays at the United Church, 1920 G St. NW DC. The cost is $3/meeting. Dinner afterwards is optional.
2. French Conversation Classes
We offer Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced classes. Please check our calendar.
3. French Cooking Class :
This is a monthly activity. We learn about French cuisine in French.
4. Brown Bag Seminar in French
Every Wednesday, bring your lunch and speak French from 12:00 pm to 12:30 pm. About 12:30 pm the speaker of the day takes the stage. Native speakers and learners attend every week. $7 fee covers wine, coffee and tea. Ends at 1 pm.
5. French Book Club
We meet once per month and discuss a book either written in French or by a French writer (or both!). The cost is $ 3.00. Refreshments will be served. We will go out for diner afterwards (optional)
6. Zouk, Salsa, Bachata and Cha Cha Dance Lessons
We do this from time to time. However, we are planning to do it every other week. The schedule will be disclosed soon.
And it doesn't stop there. We're always looking for new opportunities to socialize while enjoying French language and culture. We participate in guided museum tours, lectures, exhibits, street festivals, concerts, sporting events and cultural events at the French Embassy and other locations. All the events are selected with the French and Francophile in mind. You'll see the exact time and location for events once you join our group.
