I became organizer "by accident", and the group never had any structure when I led it. I'm sorry that one person was unhappy, but everyone who's gone to the group thus far has seemed to enjoy it as-is. That's not to say improvements can't be made, but don't put too much weight on one criticism. Thanks to Tracy for taking over!

I liked the unstructured format that allowed for several conversations at once. The result was a lot of noise and this was a bit of a problem, but more structure might mean having everyone focus on the same subject and only one person at a time talking, and that is not nearly as rich an experience. I wouldn't have minded more of a standup, cocktail party type situation where people could drift around and talk to a broader range of people.

Daniel, interesting point. It *is* unfortunate that in these situations, we usually wind up interacting with only a subset of the participants. For these kinds of sit-down situations, how about a periodic reshuffle of seating (say every 30 minutes)?

I think a change in seating at 7:30 would be worth trying.

As far as noise, there isn't much that we can do about that. Having two tables apart might help with the disjointed discussions. Certainly, structure can be added, but I'd like others' input and suggestions. I don't know how this Meet-up was run in the past. Feel free to offer suggestions, ideas, etc. Some may prefer structure, others an informal evening - still others a combination of the two.

Regards the demise of the French language, I implied a few decades and not tomorrow! If you are following the economic/political/cultural and IT influences over the last 30 years, you will come to a similar conclusion. In fact even the French ministers who spoke in the EU forums only in French now-a-days sometimes revert to English, so that they are not misunderstood. Also, French is used in the UN, FIFA, Olympics etc more due to protoco and the French insistence, rather than necessity, which one day, may stop. There are many ways French can remain a vibrant, lively language and even grow, if the French realize how to coax the world to using more French (Ex: Older adults learning a language (a complex task) to negate the impact of Alzeimer's/Dementia)... but, often their fonctionnaires/politicians are too gauche or arrogant to make a genuine attempt… Example… see the funny episode of John Oliver and FIFA at http://www.youtube.co... from 4 minutes and 30 seconds on.

I had a great time. I was not bothered by the lack of structure, and unless we're in a very quiet place it's not really possible to have a larger group conversation. I too was disappointed how noisy it was. It was the place's acoustics, I think, and not our placement, that made it difficult to hear. I run another meetup, and we meet at Santini's, just a short distance away. Sure, the ambience is not at all French, but it's much easier to hear there. I would argue, too, that La Madeleine having a French name and French food does not really add all that much to the experience. In any case, I'm grateful to the organizer for putting these meetings together, wherever they are.

By the way, I am very sensitive to colognes, and would like to request that people use very little if any at our meetings, since we are close together. I don't want to mention names, but if you'd like to know if it was you, feel free to ask me.

Je suis partiellement d'accord. Oui, c'est bruyant mais c'est comme un café réel. Il faut concentrer. Selon moi, c'était agréable et je compte revenir à la prochaine ''meetup''.

Lovely people! Yet there was no structure to the evening, and many disjointed conversations in a noisy place. Sadly, for now, I will leave this group. If any of you are interested in just talking on the phone to practiquer la langue, call me at[masked]-9514. Leave a message if I'm on the phone, which I am a lot due to work. Best wishes, everyone.

Quel dommage!

I am studying on my own for now. It is embarrassing, because I can think all the correct sentences, but can't say them. I hope to be at the table, eventually.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
