Intermediate French Practice Session: Votre Famille

Join us intermediate "students" who are developing confidence with free-form French conversation.  This is a motivational practice session, not a class.  We do not correct each other nor do we struggle to get every word perfect.

We practice what we know.  We develop more facility recalling and utilizing French words, phrases, and grammar.  We learn to speak more fluidly and with more confidence.  Our greater ease motivates us to learn more.   Eventually we find that we are more comfortable speaking with francophones.

It is easy to participate.  Use whatever French that you do know. Fill in with English or with your best guess whatever is necessary to keep conversing smoothly.  Translate so that everyone will understand what you are saying.

You can look up new words after our conversation, but, while at the meeting, pretend that you are fluent and have no need to hesitate.  Keep the conversation flowing, allowing the French to flow up and out with it.

If you want, do a bit of pre-meeting homework: Practice what you might say on the subject before the meeting. You can look up words or write out a script.  Practice at home.  But, when you do get to us, forget the script.  Use anything that you remember, and fake the rest.

The philosophy of this practice session is that "It is more important to try than to get it right."  No one will judge you. We'll just have fun together getting ever more comfortable using the language.

This meeting we will converse about our families. Who are they?  How would you describe them?

The meeting was subdued. Only one person, besides Dennis and myself, showed, but we had a good discussion, anyway.

Bonjour, Isabelle, this Thursday meeting is primarily a practice session for beginning and intermediate students of the language. Born in France you are likely way too strong a speaker to enjoy this meeting much. Tara will be scheduling a regular conversational meeting for March that you will enjoy much more. It includes many ex-patriots and advanced francophones, and an occasional intermediate student comme moi.

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
