Let’s get a head(less) start to the HALLOWEEN weekend with a ~Spirited Happy Hour ~
Hotel San Carlos is going back to its spooky-glam roots with a new lounge and an attempt at becoming a cornerstone in the burgeoning downtown Phoenix scene. We will be joining The Phoenix Singles for this howling event and the manager has graticiously extended the happy hour until 6:30 pm just for us. Also, if you plan to park on the street, bring change because it is metered until 8:00 pm; or you can take the light rail since it goes right by the hotel.
There is going to be a Ghost Tour beginning at 7:00 pm; I am doing a separate posting for that event in case you are daring enough to take the tour! Boo!
What: A new lounge at downtown Phoenix’s historic Hotel San Carlos.
When: Happy hour, 4 to 6 p.m.; reverse happy hour, 9 p.m. to close.
Where: Hotel San Carlos, 202 N. Central Ave., Phoenix.
Admission: No cover.
Ghost Lounge, a dining-and-dancing space adjacent to the hotel’s lobby, borrows its name from the apparitions that are reported to haunt the hotel.
To managers MacKenzie Davis and Jason Kirkhorn, the 82-year-old hotel seemed like the perfect place for a casual lounge serving upscale tastes.
“There is a difference between a club and a lounge,” he said. Without blaring music and on-the-prowl singles, Davis said, “Ghost Lounge is a great place to get to know someone.”
Hotel San Carlos once catered to old Hollywood’s elite, Davis said. Now the hotel is attracting patrons who want a taste of old Hollywood in a modern setting, and without the cover charge.
“All you have to know is the history of the hotel,” Davis said. “The whole ambience is perfect for a place like Ghost Lounge.”
Ghost Lounge provides a collection of subtle museum pieces, like vintage glass chandeliers, a marble table cut by hand and an 80-year-old dark wooden bar.
The hotel isn’t ashamed to show its age either, with photographs adorning the walls of the lounge, showing off its early days as Arizona’s premier hotel.
But despite Hotel San Carlos’s historical charm, Davis insisted, “there’s nothing pretentious about this place.”
