Skeptics in the Pub (March)

Guildford Skeptics in the Pub host speakers on subjects such as science, superstition, alternative medicine, philosophy and religion in the relaxed atmosphere of the backroom of the Star Inn, Guildford.

Speakers come from a wide range of backgrounds and viewpoints but, ultimately, are skeptical. Skepticism, put basically, is an insistence on robust evidence for claims; claims of the efficacy of alternative medicine, the existence of mystical beings, crytozoological oddities and deities; the claims of psychics, astrological predictions... and more!

No ticket required, but they do ask for £2.50 to cover speakers' expenses, who give their time for free.

This month's talk by linguistics lecturer Lynne Murphy is entitled How America Saved the English Language and takes you on a grammatical tour of transatlantic prejudices, challenging what you think you know about Americanisms- and their effect on the Mother Tongue.

People who bring guests along may have to find their own seats. Please don't RSVP "Yes" if you're not going to attend as persistent offenders will not be invited to future events!!

A very interesting talk but difficult to concentrate at times as it was so so cold!!!! Ooops, using so twice would be regarded as very American :-)

Just been told I have to go to a work event in London. I'll try and swing by when I get back, but as I don't know what time that might be, I'd better change my RSVP to no. Sorry about that.

I've pre-warned the organisers that we have so many people coming- to be fair to them, please change your RSVP in good time if you change your mind about attending so I can keep them up to speed with our numbers. Thank you :-)
