Book Club (February) - Life of Pi

Join us at The Parkway, Guildford for our first regular book group, where we'll talk about Yann Martel's multi-award winning Life of Pi

Good value meals are available, but I'd request if you are dining that you please arrive early so you're finished eating by 8:00pm. There's ample free parking and the pub's only a brisk 15 minute walk from central Guildford

This meetup will repeat on the last Wednesday of the month- March's book will be Oscar Wilde's classic, The Picture of Dorian Gray

For the benefit of several confused people. I originally set up this event to gauge interest in a book club with no other details, and enough people responded for me to change it to a live event. In doing so, I should have changed everyone's RSVP and begun from scratch but I didn't- my bad.
We had a situation where, despite me sending 2 emails, there were lots of people on the confirmed list with comments like "I might be interested" etc, so I moved everyone to the waiting list and sent an email asking all those definitely interested in coming along in February to re-confirm their RSVP. This was on Sunday, and everyone had the same opportunity to respond.
Emma- your's is exactly the type of comment which I wasn't sure meant you were coming in Feb
    Amanda- Ditto
I'm trying to work out if the pub can give us a space for more people, or if I can perhaps change venue, but at the minute I can only take the first 12 who responded to my email on Sunday, sorry.
    Watch this space :-)
    Mike

Ah, I must read my emails properly. I thought it was only aimed at those who weren't sure so had posted comments as such. I had replied that I was looking for a book club so count me in. I only got the notification yesterday that I was put on the waiting list so didn't realise until then what was going on, but which time it was too late. This is the first meet up thing that I have accepted so I need to take more care in future. If you can't expand the group I will look for another one.

Almost anything by Jodi Picoult - read about 12 of hers and they are all brilliant.

Mike, might it be an idea to start a discussion for book suggestions to keep them all in one place. I'd like to suggest The Ragged Trousered Philanthropist by Robert Tressel, Headong by Michael Frayn, and Christ Recrucified by Nikos Kazantzakis.

    January 12, 2013

    • Gale

love Michael frayn, not read this but loved both spies and Copenhagen.

      January 12, 2013

  • Gale

I would also suggest Margaret atwoods the handmaids tale as a cracking read

'The controversial 'we need to talk about Kevin' should prompt some lively debate. A classic which has just been made into a movie is f Scott fitzgeralds sublime 'The great gatsby' although in my eyes they've got the casting all wrong! (although Isla fisher is a delight to watch even in the wrong role.) Other novels I've enjoyed recently are Barbara king solvers Eco armageddon 'flight behaviour' and penelope fitzgeralds at the gate of angels looking at how scientists can get it so wrong......always interested in hearing what other people are reading, Esp novels that weave human stories around bigger scientific or political/historical ideas, book group is a great idea, well done (again!) Heading to amazon to download the 20p book - thanks Gale. Didn't want to see the film as I always cry when there are real animals in films. Hope the book doesn't have the same effect!

If you're happy to shop at amazon, life of pi is currently 20p for the ebook from here
