Come celebrate Mardi Gras!!!

MEMBER REQUEST:

Mardi Gras will be back at the Convention Center on Saturday, Feb 15, 2014 and I thought it could be a lot of fun to go check out.

A couple of members mentioned it and tell me they had such a great time when they went last year, it's got my curiosity up. I have never been there yet. Do you want to go with me to see what all the talk is about???

Famous for their beads and bobbles, food, and drink, I would love to go try their Cinnamon Whiskey called Fireball.

There is entertainment all night long from 7:15 pm with a stunning array of a cast of characters that will keep you entertained in grand style!

From costumed characters to painted models – showgirls & showboys - to entertainers dancin' in "the streets!".

They invite you to come in full costume and join the parade! I don't know I will be in full costume, but I am certainly going to make the most of the experience. The Zydeco sound is relentless, pulsating and funky, and easily appealing to fans of all genres. You will be dancing and celebrating before you know it.

Come for dinner and experience great dining at their large Food, Oyster and Wine Bar. Or simply drinks!!!

They boast we should try their AMAZING new Entrees – Bourbon Flamed Garlic Pepper Shrimp and New Orleans Rose Farfalle Pasta or our Very Popular Mardi Gras Sampler Platter.

I don't know I will be eating a full dinner there, but I certainly would like to try their cuisine. Are you as curious as I am?

Let's go!!!

Purchase your ticket ahead of time through Ticketmaster.

>Tickets are $18 ($16 + $2 tax) each when purchased in person at a Ticketmaster.

>Tickets are $21.50 ($16 + $2 tax + $3.50 phone order charge) when ordered over the phone.

(I picked my ticket up at McPhillips Street Station Ticketmaster for $18.)

 http://winnipegmardigras.com/

No $2 Meet up fee.

(Let me know when you have your ticket please!!!)

• Located on the 3rd floor of the RBC Convention Centre

• 6pm to 2am

 _________________________________________________

WE SHALL MEET... on the 2nd Floor of the Convention Center by the escalators for 5:45pm.

***I will wait there till about 6:10pm, then after that head upstairs to find a table(s).

If you miss me there, you will have to find us inside. I have not been to this before so I don't know where we will be sitting yet. It is Rush seating.

 _________________________________________________

I have been told that you are not allowed to bring your coat in, and on the 2nd level there will be people taking your ticket at the base of the escalator that goes to the 3rd floor.

If you are wearing a coat, they won't let you pass and will send you to the coat check area for an additional charge. A suggestion was made to park in the indoor parking and leave your coat in the cars trunk. So now you have a choice and are forwarned.

That was another fun night! Lots to see and prices were great except for the food. I had the jambalaya which was tasty and spicy, but not worth $17. I should have skipped the crabcakes. The $2 photo booth provided my favorite souvenir of the night! Getting there early ensured we had seating for all and gave us a chance to wander, but I liked it more once there was a bigger crowd. I was disappointed by the band - they were great at first, but after the first 6 songs every one sounded the same to me. Would I go again next year? Maybe ....

Apparently around 1:30 am they held a beauty contest for the men in drag! That would have been fun to watch.

      February 18, 2014

    • Stacey

Didn't you see some of the contestants? They did different things, like a dance contest for them. I saw one in women's underwear, high heels and fish net stockings. He was prancing around for a while. It was something to see! That is for sure.

Good to see everyone out at Mardi Gras! Great company is key!

    February 16, 2014

    • Stacey

I agree. This group has lots of "great" people too.

This meet up started out really unexpectedly quiet. Hardly anyone was there at the opening. The place was really set up nice, and nice to look at. I had a Po boy which is a sub sandwich. The beef one was just okay. I like subway better. Some of the foods that people were eating looked interesting but I was not in to them. A Free Press photographer took photos of some of the members of the group, so be on the look out for them. The acrobats were neat to watch. When the band started up, if you were in the crowd, it was really fun and the guy in the band with the accordion actually made playing an accordion look cool! Not as busy as I expected and most of the group left around 11pm. Some looked bored. Some looked like they had an awesome time. So it really depended on their frame of their mind when they went. Oh I tried the fireball whiskey. To me it tasted like cinnamon flavored mouthwash. LOL I didn't find it hot at all.

Didn't make it, and I was so excited to go. Nasty pounding migraine which is still with me. Barometric pressure. Also annoying incessant ringing in my right ear. Thankfully hadn't bought my ticket in advance. Sure sounds like you all had lots of fun. Sorry I didn't change my RSVP Stacey. Just couldn't get up in time to do it.

I had fun, lots of interesting costumes, the band was really good and I did try the crocodile fritters. No they did not taste like chicken LOL and I quite liked them.

    February 16, 2014

    • Shirley

Tasted to me like a spiced type of meat - texture was similar to chicken but had more flavour and it was very filling.

It is bound to be packed at Mardi Gras. Really busy. We will do our best to save seats, but cannot guarantee one for you. Best thing is to meet us for the meet up time if you want one guaranteed. Still most of us will be up dancing I think, so we can share seats at worst case situation.

    February 14, 2014

  • David I.

Have to work until 5, save me a seat!

    February 14, 2014

I got my ticket on Saturday, after checking out last year's event. Great food prices..and great ideas for costumes/accessories! Went to The Party Store (north of old stadium) and was pleasantly surprised by very affordable things like beads, hats and feather boas! Can hardly wait for Saturday night! Stacey - can you send me your phone number, just in case I get lost in the crowd??

Will there be a reserved table or something? I have purchased my ticket...looking forward to it :)

    February 9, 2014

    • Stacey

No reserved table. It is rush seating for all. We are meeting on the second floor by the escalator to go up to the 3rd floor where Mardi Gras is for 6pm. After that we will go up together and find a spot.

      February 9, 2014

    • Stacey

Mardi Gras starts at 6pm and this way we have a better chance to get a place for the whole group to sit together. Some plan on eating supper, or at least something there.

      February 9, 2014

  • Donna

Does anybody have an idea of how many are dressing up and how many are not?....5:45 is kinda early for me but I don't want to go and not be able to find the group...

    February 9, 2014

    • Stacey

Well, Jeff is going to be in full costume. Many are wearing masks and beads. Some in full costume but I don't really know who other than Jeff for sure. I will be dressed in black and then jazzing it up with feathers and beads. I cannot afford a full new costume, but should be a great time no matter how you dress.

      February 9, 2014

  • Susanne

Getting a ticket is on my to-do list this weekend..not sure about a costume..but I'm up for living dangerously..err..bravely..and trying new things!

BTW... anyone who doesn't have a ticket should buy theirs from JDRF as they get half for the foundation. Plus it is actually $16.00 you pay ! It has to be cash or cheque and you can park in the loading zone for a couple of minutes to run in . Just don't run into "Birks" and get lost LOL!

      January 16, 2014

In case you didn't know you can buy them at cost ($16) directly from: JDRF [masked] Lombard Avenue

Hey did you know that Mardi Gras is on a long weekend. Monday Feb 17 is Louis Riel Day. I forgot about that.

    January 9, 2014

  • Kari

you got me at alligator! Plus this will be the closes I'll get to Mardi Gras for still some time. First meetup with this group & looking forward to it.

    January 6, 2014

    • Stacey

After viewing alligators in person and repeatedly cleaning a turtle tank, I can not imagine eating them. I think part of me would be a vegetarian if I didn't lack in iron so much.

      1 · January 7, 2014

    • Wendy

haha I hear you. Doctor's orders for me to eat meat too. Thankfully, I don't recall anything so green and ugly (and I assume slimy) being on the list!!

      January 7, 2014

  • Gord

I paid for my ticket today. By the way, while some may have qualms about eating alligator, my guess is that an alligator would have no such hesitation about eating us in the right circumstances.

    2 · January 5, 2014

    • Wendy

haha. I bet they aren't even fussy about the circumstances...

      January 5, 2014

    • marian a.

I heard it tastes like chicken Ha! Ha! Then again a lot of people claim things taste like chicken ?? LOL!

      January 5, 2014

  • Shirley

I just phoned and purchased my ticket.

    January 3, 2014

  • Bev

If you are planning in eating you may want to arrive earlier. They usually run out of the alligator fairly early on Saturday.

    1 · January 2, 2014

LOL! ...yew... I don't know whether to laugh at the words, or cringe!

      January 2, 2014

I hope this isn't offending any members that are vegetarians. Everyone in this world has their own idea of things.
