Picnic in St Vital Park

AS OF 5:30AM SATURDAY- LOOKS LIKE IT WILL BE A BIT CLOUDY THIS MORNING, BUT OTHER THAN THAT, SHOULD BE OKAY WEATHER.

THE PICNIC IS ON.

*****

To make things easier for those taking a bus, we will set up at the picnic area that has a shelter/roof, which is located at the end of the parks road. (So if you were to WALK into the park from a bus stop, enter from the EXIT and you wont have as far to walk.)

There is a small parking lot there as well.

People driving their vehicles would just enter at the entrance and keep driving till just before the exit. It is not far by car. You will see us set up on the left side of the road. (Just keep going straight and follow the road to the end.)

The road through the park is a one way.

REMEMBER TO BRING A PORTABLE CHAIR FOR YOURSELF!!!

We should eat around noon.

*************************************************

A couple said they don't know how to get to St Vital Park. If you know where Osborne Village is, and are coming from that area, just follow Osborne south. The road changes to Dunkirk. At St Vital Road which is before St Mary's Road, turn right and go straight to the end.

At the end where the stop sign is, turn LEFT and continue down River Road. You will go past houses, and between houses you will see a very green area with a large sign that says St Vital Park Entrance. Go in there.

If you see St Vital Exit, and came from Dunkirk, you went past the entrance.

Check out the map above.

***

This year I thought St Vital would be a good place for a picnic. It is a little quieter and easier to obtain a picnic spot without reservation cost to the group.

It is a beautiful park that I don't get out to very often. So I think it will be a great way to spend the first day of summer in 2014.

I will bring the net again with the volleyball and badminton rackets, so you can choose what you want to play if you feel active. Croquet, and football. Frisbee anyone? Or perhaps you just want to sit and enjoy the day.

Everyone should bring a food item. If you have a portable folding chair, I would advise bringing that for yourself, as well.

No $2 Meet up fee, but bring a food item for the potluck picnic.

Bill, today I tried roasting cut up fresh potatoes with that Greek seasoning. OMG, so good and so cheap. It tastes like restaurant style good food. I used 4 medium raw potatoes for 2 meals. Peeled and sliced into wedges, sprayed with canola cooking spray, even though you said to use olive oil. Sprinkled the seasoning and a little salt. Not much salt. Roasted for 25 minutes on 400 heat and so good! Thanks for the cooking tip!!! I used actually less potatoes than if I was making mashed potatoes and feel just as full!

I think he used a different brand name, but I used Club House Greek Spices.

I thought I would go out on my deck and relax for a while this evening, and all of a sudden the sky went from blue sky and sunshine, to dark cumulus nimbus clouds that are large and moving quickly. It looks and sounds like the threat of rain. What I didn't expect though is in one cumulus nimbus cloud there are two swirling circles of cloud forming. I sure hope that doesn't mean tornado and this is all in my imagination.

    June 21

    • Stacey

I just heard on BOB FM that there was funnel clouds spotted near St Andrews Airport, so I did see them forming. What an interesting experience.

I had a fantastic day! From my new personal chef, Bill cooking demonstrations (just teasing Bill) of how to make Mediterranean chicken, to everything falling into place right down to the last detail, including having a bathroom next to us. The weather was perfect. Not really any bugs. No wind. A beautiful spot with gorgeous trees acting like a canvas over us. (I was worried we would have to walk across the park to get to one, but we didn't have to after all.) I love how everyone works together! I cannot wait to see what the pictures Ariel took look like. Lots of good food, a relaxed atmosphere with plenty of friendly and delightful people. I couldn't ask for more. To me, a really great day!

    • Stacey

FYI - there were a couple items left behind, such as a folding spoon, blue bowl, metal tongs, small Rubbermaid container, blue Walmart bag.

      June 21

    • Stacey

PS. The food was amazing. Beside the wonderful chicken, burgers and hot dogs, Sandra's homemade cheesecake brownies were amazing! Arlene's homemade oatmeal coconut cookies so delightful, I could not stop at one... Many salads and fruit, pies, what else did I eat? So much good stuff. My tummy is very very happy. Thank you all for such a great time!

  • Stacey

It looks like it will be a terrific day, weatherwise! I am sure many will be picnicking and bbqing today, the first day of summer. I am leaving from home at 10am to make sure I can grab a spot for us. Remember, I will grab the picnic spot with a shelter since it is closer for those taking a bus to walk to. See you there!

    June 21

  • Elisha

For those that need to take a bus. I have room in my car I can pick some people up if they want to meet me at polo park. But I don't think I will be able to give rides back. As I will have to leave early.

    June 18

    • Elisha

Maggie, if you can meet me at the sport check doors at polo park that would be fantastic. At 1030. I drive a green intrepid.

      June 21

    • Magui C.

Hi Elisha ok thanks I will be there. !!!

      June 21

  • Sheree

Due to my allergies I can't eat anything so will be bringing my own. I will pick up some munchies though.

    June 21

  • Elisha

So... I'm at the grocery store.... No broccoli so.... I'm gonna have to think of another thing to bring... Any suggestions?

    June 21

    • Elisha

Would u object to a spinach salad?

      June 21

    • Stacey

Just bring what you think is right.

      1 · June 21

  • Shirley

I was waiting until this morning to pick up my salad and bottled water at Costco so I may be a bit late arriving - I should be there by 1130.

    June 21

  • Stacey

Its kind of tricky to predict the weather today. I see some sunshine and some dark clouds when I look out the window. The weather forecast is still different depending on which website you look at. However the Weather Network states by noon it should be 24 degrees and partly cloudy/sunshine. I will go with that.

    1 · June 21

  • Bev P.

I may or not be there it's all going to depend on timing I have to help move my youngest daughter hopefully it's done before noon

    June 21

  • Stacey

I believe it is the 76 bus that goes to St Vital Park.

    June 20

  • Wendy

Sorry, had to change RSVP to "No", just received a big box of 8mm film reels to digitize, and have to get started at them this weekend. I was down for bringing a dessert. You guys have fun!!

    June 20

  • Stacey

Bill, so are you for sure bringing the portable propane bbq? If so I will buy the small propane tank. If not, I will buy briquettes. I can only buy one or the other. Please let me know today, if you can.

    June 20

  • Betty R.

I can bring a package of hamburger buns. A package of smoked fish sushi. And if available vegetable dumplings.

    June 20

    • Stacey

      Wonderful.

      June 20

    • Stacey

Other than Mark and Betty bringing a pkg of hamburger buns, is anyone else bringing buns???

      June 20

  • Stacey

In review, about 8 to 10 of you committed to bringing something specific so far. What are the rest of you bringing???? We could use fruit, desserts, munchies like chips or something like that, a side dish, wieners or burger patties, buns. We have already paper plates, cups, condiments, napkins. If someone was to bring a portable bbq, we would not have to worry about grabbing a bbq pit. So people.... What are YOU going to bring? Put a little note on the screen like the others. It will be great to hear from you.

    June 14

    • Stacey

If you know for sure you are bringing buns, please note on screen. We don't want to end up with tons of pkgs of buns.

      June 20

    • candace

I will bring chips and nachos. I'm so busy at work that making sushi for tomorrow or Sunday isn't going to happen easily.

      June 20

  • Cheron L.

Stacey, I don't eat meat and am not eating bread at the moment, so that's one less to consider.

When I woke up at 5am Thursday morning, the northern sky looked like it was on fire. I have never seen such a bright red sky mixed with orange colors in my life. To me that means a big storm is coming. It quickly dissipated by 5:30am, but I think it is warning us of what is to come. I am hoping the picnic is not rained out, but if Saturday is a rainy day, we will move the picnic to Sunday June 22, 2014. My fingers are crossed that all goes well for the picnic this weekend.
