Doors Open Winnipeg

Member Suggestion:

I was looking for ideas for things to do in May 2013.

Quite a few members were interested in checking out Doors open Winnipeg on Sunday May 26, 2013.

It is a free event.

There are different venues around Winnipeg.

Plans so far are to meet up at The Forks and go from there since a lot of this is happening in that area.

We shall meet inside by the Pancake House since it seems to be a central location.

I am interested in going on the trolley they should be having.

We can also break up in smaller groups if interest to visit locations is different.

Make sure you wear good shoes for walking, just incase. There is a free trolley and the Spirit bus, but we will have to get to them to use them. Always better to be prepared.

I have picked up 3 flyers with Doors Open info. We will probably split into groups, because there are different choices of places to see, and everyone has their own ideas of what they would like to see. We will only have time to see a couple places on this day.

Don’t forget to look for the Doors Open Winnipeg Insert in the Winnipeg Free Press on Thursday, May 24th.

You can also pick up a copy at the Explore Manitoba Centre at the Forks or at the Millennium Library on Donald Street after May 18th.

The insert has great information on all the buildings, locations and times for this year’s event. It is a great tool for helping plan your weekend.

NO $2 meet up fee for this meet up.

The two places I plan to view after breakfast are:

The Fox & Fiddle - runs from noon till 5pm

http://foxandfiddle.com/winnipeg

At 456 Main St. stands the former Bank of Toronto in the area that was known as ‘Banker’s Row’. Built in 1905 by Kelly Brothers & Mitchell, the Bank of Toronto was a latecomer to Winnipeg’s financial scene however this building made its presence known with its lavish façade.

The Bank possessed Winnipeg’s first marble façade, perhaps one of the few in Canada, with four Corinthian columns rising from shoulder-high bases to capped fourth-storey cornice & balustrade. The spectacular interior included panelled walls and columns in white Italian marble, intricate iron designs around the windows and oak-panelled offices. The building has had a number of functions over its history including bank, credit union, library & art gallery.

Today the Fox and Fiddle Restaurant and Pub has taken-up residence in the former Bank of Toronto. Winnipeg’s newest venue for fine pub fare, The Fox and Fiddle, brings a modern touch to the classic British Pub concept. Moreover, it brings an exciting new look to a building that is rich with heritage

The Fort Garry Hotel – 1913 (Celebrating 100 years!)

The Hotel Fort Garry - runs from 2pm to 4:30pm

http://fortgarryhotel.com/

The Fort Garry Hotel is a designated national historic site. Since 1913, this former Grand Trunk Pacific Railway hotel has stood as a symbol of Winnipeg's importance as a North American transportation hub and of the prairie city's affinity for old world elegance.

The hotel is Winnipeg's best example of the chateau style of architecture which first found expression in the magnificent railway hotels built across Canada before 1930. One of Winnipeg's most prestigious landmarks, The Fort Garry is celebrating their centennial anniversary in 2013. The Fort Garry has survived two world wars, two city-wide floods, and the Winnipeg General Strike. Entering the second century, its success has never been more apparent.

Guided tours will include the 1st and 7th floors based on availability. Guided tours will be offered at 2:00 pm, 2:30 pm, 3:00 pm, 3:30 pm, 4:00 pm & 4:30 pm. Tours will last about 25 minutes. Maximum 50 people per tour. No pre-registration. First-come-first-served. Please meet in the lobby.

*If you want to go to a different place to view, others in the group may too. We can always divide up into smaller groups and go do our own thing.

I plan to park at the Forks and ride the Spirit bus or trolley to the destinations & back.

There were a few of us from Mary Ann's group that decided to walk back to the forks and we stopped to do the tour of the fort Garry hotel

    May 27, 2013

    • Stacey

Shirley said to me she thought she seen someone from our group that had gone with Mary Anne. She was right. You must of been in the first or second tour group? We got there 10 mins before the tours were to start and we were lucky enough to get in the 4th tour there were so many people there.

      May 27, 2013

  • Stacey

Mary Ann, what did you end up going to see? How was the Vaughn Street jail? We saw long line ups for that one, and a person dressed in a old police uniform from the trolley. How did it go?

    May 26, 2013

    • Mary A.

Glad your group had a great time! Yes, the Fort Garry Hotel is very impressive and well worth visiting. We had a very long wait to get in to the jail, but we enjoyed the character actors and their stories. With all the waiting though, we were all kind of beat so we bussed it back to the Forks. We should do this again next year :)

      May 26, 2013

    • Stacey

      I was tired afterward too.

A BIG thank you to Jin for taking photos today. It is lovely to look back on what we saw. Great photo taking!

Stacey, You are welcome. My pleasure. I had a good time today and enjoyed the tour. Thank you for organizing such event.

      May 26, 2013

  • Shirley

I joined Stacey's Group. I was impressed by restoration of the Hotel Fort Garry. Such detailed and beautiful workmanship, the Crystal Ball Room was a spectacular site. The Fox & Fiddle was interesting to see how they have kept some of the features o the bank & I found it amusing the staff now use the Vault as there lunch room. Who would have thought that years ago. I enjoyed the day & the company.

    May 26, 2013

  • Stacey

We split into two groups. Mary Ann lead another group since they wanted to check out the jail. The group with me road the trolley, saw the first floor of the Millennium Bldg, The Fox & Fiddle and the Hotel Fort Garry. What impressed me the most was the ceilings and walls on the 7th floor of the Hotel Fort Garry. The meet up was unique and pleasant. Good company.

I'm in! I love their tour and the volunteers dressed up telling their stories in character.

      May 25, 2013

    • Stacey

I was just going to say Mary Ann wanted to see the jail. Do you know the Downtown Spirit goes past the Fort Garry Hotel, then past the jail and back around to the Forks. I am sure we can figure something out that everyone can agree on. I think it is going to be a good day!

Hi Ray. Welcome. Some of us are meeting early to go for breakfast at the Pancake house for around 10am. Those that didn't want to are meeting us at 11am just outside of the Forks Pancake House. Choose whatever is best for you. This is basically people getting together and checking stuff out. We may split up into a couple groups if the interest in what each person wants to see is different. I look forward to meeting you.

      May 21, 2013

  • Mary A.

Good choices Stacey, although there are so many great places to choose from downtown. My faves are the Vaughan Street Jail, the Harris House on Edmonton, and any house in Armstrong's Point.

    • Stacey

Terrific. Perhaps you will lead a group to those venues. I am printing off a few Downtown Spirit bus maps if some of you want to break off into smaller groups and go see other sites. I know everyone will have their own thoughts on what they want to go see.

  • Stacey

Ok then, we will meet for breakfast or coffee - whatever you decide on, and those that don't want to meet at that time, come for 11am and meet us there for Open Doors. They don't take reservations on the weekend so I will go a little earlier and get us a table.

    April 23, 2013

    • Michelle

      I could also do breakfast

      April 23, 2013

    • Stacey

      Terrific Jin Sun.

      April 24, 2013

  • Stacey

Since no reservations are needed for breakfast, it will be whoever arrives for 10am and we will count then. So we will play it by ear. It should be fine. If everyone shows though for breakfast though, we will have to split into smaller groups for tables. That is all. It should be fine.

    April 23, 2013

  • Mary A.

On Thursday, May 24, the Winnipeg Sun will include a 4 page insert on all the weekend Doors Open buildings. Be sure to pick it up!

With this meet up we have to wait till May to know more details on this, and I am sure someone will change their mind on going. That happens. Just keep your eyes open when you are looking at this site. If I see an opening for you I will let you know as well.

Hi ladies that RSVPd for Open Doors in May 2013. Something I am noticing is that the venues are set up for small groups at a time. No more than 30. I am sure it will work itself out, but we may have to do this is rotation. I will see what I can figure out.

      March 1, 2013

  • Cindy S.

I've been wanting to do this.

    February 10, 2013

  • Mary A.

Stacey, I think you'll really enjoy it. The updated building list will be published in May, and normally you can only visit 3 locations at the most in one day.
