“Secret Spitalfields” Full Guided Walk (Sunday 28th July)

“Secret Spitalfields”

Full Guided Walk

This is the latest in our fully guided walks conducted by Daniella, a qualified City of London Tour Guide whom we have employed just for this event. The walk will last for about 2 hours and has been organised solely for members of Friends in London. Numbers for this walk have to be limited to a maximum of 45. Please only book if you definitely intend to come and please do not cancel within 24 hours of the walk as this ruins it for our other members who want to come.

Date: Sunday 28th July 2013

Time: 2pm

Where: Meet on the corner of Bishopsgate and Brushfield Street.

Nearest Tube: Liverpool Street on the Central, Circle and Hammersmith Lines.

Exit Liverpool Street Station onto Bishopsgate and turn LEFT.

Brushfield Street is about 100 metres up on the right.

Please Check The MAP.

Host: John Pullen[masked]

Cost: £8 collected at the beginning of the walk.

This month we’re diving back into 2,000 years of history in a very historic area of London. It is an area which has attracted many different races throughout the millennia and they have brought their own stories with them.

We will hear of the Romans and especially stories of an amazing Roman cemetery discovered in the area. Moving forwards in time to the Middle-Ages and we will discover the story behind a medieval hospital.

There are also iconic churches in this area as well as some famous London markets. And situated in this area is one of the most intriguing houses in the whole of London. It is a house which has been frozen in time for hundreds of years!

Over the centuries Spitalfields has attracted many peoples escaping from persecution. They include the Huguenots, Chinese, Jews and Bangladeshis to name but a few. We will hear their stories and their effect on the area.

Finally, we shall as usual, go to a local pub for a drink. But the story hasn’t ended. Because the pub we shall be visiting has an association with the area’s most notorious and infamous character – none other than Jack the Ripper!

After our very successful previous guided walks, we have once again employed the services of Daniella; a professional badged London Guide who will bring all these stories to life. I will of course be there to help out with the organisation of the event and to find a nice pub at the end. So if you fancy joining a really friendly bunch of people, we can enjoy learning about an area stacked in history, intrigue and blood.
