San Francisco, CA
A reminder that the European Expats Gatherings, unlike the Friends of Europe Soirées, are intended specially for expatriate Europeans, their guests and BAFOE regulars. Our definitions:
Expatriate European: someone now living in the U.S. who was born and/or raised in a European country. European neighbor countries (like Turkey and Iran) and former European territories are OK too. Expats can bring one guest each.
BAFOE Regular: someone who attends events on a regular basis and who has already been to at least three other BAFOE events. Regulars are expected to "know the ropes" and help welcome newcomers.
Because BAFOE events are always full with lengthy waiting lists, the idea is to have at least one event every month that people actually from Europe - especially newcomers - can more easily get in to.
So for the events in San Francisco, we alternate between European Expats Gatherings intended primarily for Europeans, and Friends of Europe Soirées open to both Europeans and europhiles. In the U.S., people who were not born in Europe probably outnumber those who were by 200 to 1, so a little affirmative action seems appropriate!
If you sign up for a European Expats Gathering and you are not clearly a European expat or a BAFOE regular, I'm sorry but you will be removed from the RSVP list. You'll receive an email saying that "your status has been changed" to "not going". If there was any mistake, feel free to contact me. Please come instead to the next Friends of Europe Soirée to which both friends of and from Europe are very welcome! New events are usually posted on the Monday following an event.
Thanks in advance for your understanding and cooperation.
