Mooney Mountain

  • Sep 20, 2014 · 6:45 AM

Mooney Mountain - Sedona

Sat, Sept 20

Leader:  Kim Hemmersbach  ([masked])

Length:  8 miles R/T

Phone: [masked]

Rating:  Semi-Strenuous

Elev Change:  1,700’

MEET at Denny’s parking lot (south-side of the building), SW corner of 1-17 and Bell Road, 6:45 AM ------- Depart @ 7AM sharp

This trail was originally built to drive cattle to and from summer pastures on the rim and is still used for this purpose. Because of this relationship to ranching, this is a wide, well-constructed trail.

From Sebra Tank the trail follows Mooney Canyon for about 2.5 miles at which time it starts a steep ascent to the top to the rim – or if we choose, we can continue up the riparian Mooney Canyon. If we choose the climb, the views are outstanding from the top and all along the way. Shade is available in the riparian zone of the canyon but once on the slopes of the canyon, shade becomes scarce, so bring plenty of water and a hat. The trail tops out at the junction of Taylor Cabin and Casner Mountain trails. We will return via the same route.

And to be expected, we will all enjoy refreshments and food at THAT Brewing Company Taproom in Cottonwood post-hike.

Remember CA$H for carpooling contribution and lunch.

Since I'm new to this area/climate - what should I expect temp and weather wise just so I know how to come prepared?

The NWS is a good source to keeping up-to-date on climate. Saturday: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 11am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 84. Calm wind becoming southwest around 6 mph in the afternoon.

I think I could meet you at the trail head, the black tank. What time? I live close to Sedona.
