DIXIE MINE TRAIL - Fountain Hills

Saturday, January 19th
Leader: Rich Flammang ([masked])

Length: 6 miles R/T (see below)

Rating: Easy Plus (see below)
MEET in the NORTH END of the Target parking lot at 16825 E Shea Blvd Fountain Hills

Elev Gain: 200 ft (see below)
The start of the hike is in open, rolling terrain with Sonoran Desert flora. As you head up the trail you can see expansive vistas that include
the McDowells, the Verde River valley, the southern end of the Mazatzal range and Four Peaks. As we approach the Dixie Mine, mine
tailings are easily spotted. After crossing a service road, we will ascend to the mineshaft entrance. Below a riparian area contains other mine
entrances and petroglyphs. At this point for those who wish a challenge, they may climb the “thigh buster” hike* to the radio towers atop
Thompson Peak.

*-This option adds 4 miles R/T to the hike with a rating of 'strenuous' & 2,300 ft elev. gain (hiking poles recommended).
