Winnie the Pooh Hike - Extended Version. 12.1 miles (19.5 km)

This is a 12.1 mile (19.5 km) walk over mostly flat ground with uneven terrain and overgrown vegetation to negotiate in a few places. This walk is graded as a 6/10 and as such isn't too challenging but please make sure you are able to keep a reasonable pace over the length of the walk.

This is an extended version of the hike we did in September last year.

Our walk starts along the upper Medway Valley where we will be meander through meadows whilst criss crossing the rivers Meadway, Eridge and Grom until we reach the village of Withyam where we'll stop for an early lunch break.

After lunch we'll head towards the village of Hartfield across some stunning agricultural land. We'll take a short detour at Hartfield to visit Pooh corner. This is the shop to which A.A. Milne would bring his son, Christopher Robin (the inspiration for the Winnie-the-Pooh stories), to buy sweets. The shop itself still looks like an old village sweet shop but now sells a collection of Winnie the Pooh memorabilia. On this extended version of the walk we'll also taking Pooh sticks bridge.

After our Detour we'll get back on track and head back to Ashurst station via Summerford Farm. Sadly Ashurst station is rather remote so there is no end of walk pub stop but for anyone who's willing we can have a quick drink at Victoria on our return.

We'll meet in front of Burger King which is to the right of platform 12 at 09:20 and depart the meeting point at 09:35 to catch the 09:47 train.

  • At least one litre of water (preferably two)
  • A packed lunch
  • Some snacks
  • Money for refreshments before / after the walk.
  • Walking Boots
  • A Smile

The cost will be £9 which includes train fares and an all day guided hike.

By RSVP'ing for this walk I agree to the terms and conditions listed at the following link http://www.meetup.com/All-Seasons-Hiking/pages/Terms_and_Conditions/

Think we all found our inner child yesterday whether it was due to the mud, the pub or the jelly babies! Great fun as always and looking forward to the next one already. How's the first day of the new job going Glenn?

Mud was like a best friend yesterday. A best friend you have a love hate relationship with. It made us whinge, it made our muscles sore, it made our kit mucky, but more importantly it made us laugh. Well done to every one of us who didn't stack it!

Great walk! Note to self and others: Pale stone-washed denim is not ideal clothing for traversing colossal amounts of mud in the torrential rain.

Thanks, Glenn. It was a great... craic. :)

Sorry my trainer is totally unfit in the muddy country road. Such a disaster. The leader is far away from me, and I dropped off at the beginning hour and I am taking the train back to London safety. I told one of my hiders at the back. Not sure if she had a chance to tell yet. I enjoy the now beginning.

Thanks for letting me know Tristan. I think it's probably too shortnotice for someone on the waiting g list but you never know! I hope you're friend feels better soon.

Hi Sandra, We'll still hike in the rain ;). The forecast is dry for the morning but some rain in the afternoon (but I suspect it will be drizzly all day).

  • Sol

Morning, sorry I have to cancel my attendance unfortunately for personal reasons. Is it possible for me to either obtain a refund or to sell my place to someone on the waiting list? sorry for letting you down!

Hi Glenn, unfortunately I had to pull out of this walk. There are no trains running from my station that day which makes it quite tricky for me to get to central London. I would like to join the next walk scheduled, can I use the £9 I already paid instead of getting a refund?

I wouldn't be too keen Natalie. I was just going to give him the hairy one that's been kicking around the bottom of my rucksack.

Glenn, can you give me an estimate of what is your pace on a walk like this? I am above-average-fit, but a friend of mine considers joining, and I couldn't tell her what to expect.

Also, would you recommend hiking boots or would trail shoes be enough?

    March 4, 2013

      A former member

Hi Sofie. If your friend can run 3 km in 20 / 25 minutes I'd say they will probably be OK on this walk. Hiking boots would be preferable but trail shoes will probably be fine so long as it hasn't rained heavily in the days running up to the hike. I've posted up a brief guide to hiking speeds here: http://www.meetup.com...

Glenn, you and others on the super Box Hill walk may be surprised to learn I hope to do a proper hill walking w/e soon! I've clearly got a lot of training to do and will be in the Chilterns the day before this walk but in the unlikely event I'm able to move and a space is available I'd really love to join you guys! Ever the optimist! LOL :)

Hi Everyone! This will be my first hike with your group and I'm really looking forward to it. See you all soon. :)
