Knockholt circular hike 11.2 miles (18km) - 2nd Attempt!

We were supposed to do this hike on the 3rd of March but severe rail problems saw us unceremoniously dumped in Tonbridge, so we hiked there instead. We are going to attempt this hike again and trains willing it will all go smoothly this time :)

This is an 11.2 mile walk (18km) which is mostly flat with a few mild but muddy climbs making this walk 6/10. Please ensure you are able to walk at a reasonable pace over this sort of distance. This walk is a little longer than the previous walks we've done so if you've struggled on those then this walk may not be for you.

This walk is likely to be pretty muddy in places and trainers aren't likely to be adequate.

This walk takes us on a large loop through some beautiful Kent countryside. We start by making our way across some beautiful open ground to the wonderfully named village of Pratt's Bottom.

From there we'll be hoping from farm to farm across some stunning agricultural landscapes before descending on the village of Downe where we'll stop for lunch. We'll have a choice of two very hiking friendly pubs for our lunch stop. One will even provide us with freshly laundered slippers while we warm out boots by the fire!

After lunch we'll head towards Cudham passing Charles Darwin's home (Downe House) along the way. Cudham has a beautiful flint stone church which is home to some very friendly sheep too.

The remainder of the walk sees us traversing some hilly agricultural and wooded landscapes on our return to Knockholt

We'll be meeting at Charring Cross train station outside Burger King in front of platform 1 at 9:00 and leaving the meeting point at 09:10 to board the 09:15 train.

  • At least one litre of water (preferably two)
  • A packed lunch
  • Some snacks
  • Money for refreshments before / after the walk.
  • Walking Boots
  • We should be finished well before dark but a torch may be a good idea
  • A Smile

The cost will be £9 which includes train fares and an all day guided hike.

By RSVP'ing for this walk I agree to the terms and conditions listed at the following link http://www.meetup.com/All-Seasons-Hiking/pages/Terms_and_Conditions/

I haven't been hiking for 3 weeks so this 18.5kms was a nice workout for the legs. In brand new boots my feet were definitely happy once we were back in London. Aching feet aside, I was glad we finally conquered the Knockholt circuit - or "Knockcolt" given the number of horses we passed along the way (boom boom). Really stunning countryside with many a rolling hill and big dreamy houses. Not to mention the friendly slipper-issuing pub!

Sorry, hurt knee during training and was told to rest. So no walk for me tomorrow :-(. Still, somebody on waiting list will be happy. See you next time.

What a pity! We haven't been fulfilling our German quota recently ;)

Gutted but I am going to have to pull out, I too picked up an injury running today and can't put full weight on my leg so I need to spend tomorrow resting up. Have a great time and I will try and get along on another walk soon.

That's a shame Kat. See you again soon.

Hi Glenn, I am in the waitlist but I am receiving emails telling me that there is room. I don't understand it.

    April 5, 2013

    • Sofie

      Hey Glenn,
I believe there is a setting on Meetup, that enables a different waitlist method. With that, as soon as someone pulls out, the next person on the waitlist (the one who got waitlisted first) automaticly gets it, and the person recieves an email saying "congrats, you made the event, etc".
This might help to make it easier. I don't know where you find it, though.

      April 6, 2013

    • Glenn B

Hi Sofie, I've used that option on different meetups in the past. The problem with that is that someone can 'hold' the option to go while they decide whether they still want the space. Often the space is released with very little notice.

Hi Glenn and all, something else urgent came up. I'd have to skip this hike. I hope someone else gets to go.. wishing everyone all the fun!!

Glen, I've just emailed you and said I couldn't come this week. As I thought it's for Saturday. I see my name is already on RSVP does this mean I'm in for this Sunday, 7th April?
Do I need to pay for the difference or do I pay you on the day?
    Sorry and thanks,

    Hannah

  • Glenn B

Hi All, I'll be sending out another email tonight but I thought I'd better post here yo. The hike schedule for the 30th has been moved to the 7th because Yvette train company added £10 to the ticket price e over the Easter weekend. If you're at a loose end on the 30th now we're doing a walk from Wimbledon to Kingston instead.

    March 29, 2013

  • Sofie

      March 29, 2013

  • Chris J.

You have moved the date and I cannot attend now! I would of happily paid the extra £10 for the train ticket given the option. Please can you refund my payment

    March 29, 2013

    • Glenn B

Hi Chris, I realise that some people would have paid the extra £10 but its not something I can assume on everyones behalf. I'll refund you this evening. If you're at a loose end feel free to come along to the Wimbledon to Kingston walk.

      March 29, 2013
