Horses are amazing animals. Especially ones that are bred to run really, really fast!
I'm looking to get a group together to head down to Emerald Downs in Auburn (just off Highway 167) and admire these thoroughbreds, place a few wagers and enjoy a beautiful late summer day together with some fellow FurLifers.
Many people that have lived here in the Seattle area for a long time don't even know we have a fantastic horse racing facility only about 30 minutes away, if you have never been before it is a TON of fun! (Fursuiting isn't allowed as it may spook the horses, but tails/ears are fine if you want to wear them... they may even be your lucky charm!)
Betting is not required, but if you want to give it a try (for those 18 or older), you can bet as little as $2 on the outcome of a race, and there are many, many different ways to bet including WIN (pick first place horse), PLACE (1st or 2nd place), or SHOW (horse finishes 1st, 2nd or 3rd). The payouts depend on the current odds of each horse (displayed on a large board up until the start of the race), and constantly change as people place more money on each horse. If you're feeling lucky, bet as little as $1 on the Exacta (pick the 1st and 2nd place horses in order), Trifecta (1st/2nd/3rd) or the rare Superfecta (1st/2nd/3rd/4th) to turn a little money into a lot!
For a complete run-down of horse betting go here: http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/betting-on-horse-racing-for-dummies-cheat-sheet.html I've been to Emerald Downs many times and am pretty experienced with the horse racing scene, so I'll be happy to help out any first-timers and show them the ropes :)
On Sundays live racing starts at 2:15pm, so I was thinking to meet outside the front gate at 1:45 and go in together at 2pm. There is plenty of free parking (but it's quite a walk, plan to get there at least 10 minutes early) and preferred parking is available for $7. There are usually 9 races on the card, with the last race starting a little after 6pm. I usually stay the whole time, but feel free to leave whenever you like.
The entrance fee is $7, and food and beverages of all kinds are available for purchase. You CAN bring in outside food and drink to Emerald Downs, just nothing alcoholic.
Let's have a great day at the track! See you there!
