This Meetup is cancelled

Town Hall Meeting.

  • No location was chosen

  • Lets all get together and chat about concerns and where this group is going.

I have tried to express this through email, but It is being moderated and my voice not heard.

So here is a Meet Up to discuss such things.

"This is NOT about forming another group" no, it's becoming pretty clear that it's about hijacking an existing one.
As has been stated, this is NOT a democracy. This is a group owned, operated and financed through MJF.
If you feel you need to take your toys and leave, LEAVE. Don't hang around here trying to poison the well with an overdose of drama.
As previously said by me and others, if you want to start your own group, best wishes.

What happened here? A meeting to discuss the direction of this group cancelled by MJ? Could there be any better reason to HAVE a meeting to discuss this group of 1,000 individuals that are being held hostage and not allowed to have their voice heard!

    MJ himself states:
"Anyone who wishes to form a group where it is important to politic and regulate can always start their own group."

This is eactly what he himself is doing here. Picking and choosing what is said, what can or cannot be said, what type of meeting can or cannot be held? If this is not politicing and regulating...what is?

This is NOT about forming another group, this is about the leadership this group and allowing others to guide this group and allow it to grow and evolve. I prefer to stay here to an already well developed group. If this is a continuing example of the leadership of this group, what other choice do we have?

I wasn't of the opinion that starting a new group was a good idea before but after reading that I am.
If that is how Furlife will be run I'd rather us either switch to a new group or new site altogether

      2 · January 13, 2013

    • Da'alrakken AKA Reo Gray F.

Christopher, This group having no leadership is exactly my point. A Meetup was planned, organized, set and a list of attenedess was growing. Then, it is deleted and cancelled by this group's owner. I have been willing to let things go as they are. But this was a line drawn in the sand. I WANT to stay here. I love what Furlife is and what it has become. I want this group to thrive and grow.

This group represents 1,000+ people. I would like to see and hear other voices of this group to help guide and let Furlife grow. No other group need to be formed or "compete" with Furlife. The one and ONLY thing that that I ask is simply allow a few others to join the "organizers" list. So, far there has been nothing but resitance to this.

Regardless of your edits, This was town hall was posted to advertise a competing group, and furthermore to "grind an axe" with me. (just scroll down!) Even the current description assumes "concerns", when furlife is only full of successful events.

Anyone who wishes to form a group where it is important to politic and regulate can always start their own group. Please repost this meeting on your alternative group. I do not have the energy to continue to fight a stated hostile agenda.

Suggestions for improving specific furlife events undoubtedly will be welcomed by the individual hosts who continue to post on this list. They most of all need your love and encouragement directed straight to them.

    January 13, 2013

    • Mix

while yes i think the original point was because of personal vendetta and they did link another group- which is not competing btw there is nothing wrong with more then one furry group- it CHANGED to be something that could help the group and to shoot ideas around to make it better. honestly what is so wrong with that? no one is fighing you MJ.

i mean think of the possibilities that could come with a meeting like this. ways to help it get better, like a donation pool so you dont have to pay the full fee. or other things. future ideas for annual type meets etc etc.

      January 13, 2013

    • MaxCoyote

If you like, MJ, i can try this meetup again and make it TOTALLY CLEAR that it's NOT to be used to attack any one member of the group, OR use to advertise or promote any other meetup group. I don't think canceling this would look very good, so if you're ok with it I can take the raines for this meetup. What do you think?

      1 · January 13, 2013

Seems like alot of you can't wait till the 26th. Not trying to sound like a jerk, but perhaps save some of this discussion for the meeting? :P

Related to this issue, my position roughly goes:
    - People are entitled to post meetups, and those are their meetups.
    - Related to my house ... it's my house. This is a social group, and c'mon guys, if 5 years ago I want to uninvite a person from my birthday at my house, that goes to umm... "I'm hosting it". I reject people who make trouble (threating to pepper spray my friends). I of course don't talk to, or attend stuff where I'm not wanted?
    - Personal details and issues deserve a private discussion - furlife is for hosting and posting events.
    - I've personally hosted 50+ 5-star events and attended over 100 fantastic meets.
    - If anyone had serious complaints about any event, the "contact the organizer" link would be full. Mainly people want to know how to post events, or need encouragement to attend their first. My #1 job. I also greatly thank all those who spoke in my support. I'm really glad to hear the kind words, they mean the world to me.

    Looking forward to 2013.

Micheal the group is large its 1000 members strong and growing this is more of a community now. Nothing wrong with a town hall kinda meet where concerns can be voiced and ideas shot around to help better the community.

      January 11, 2013

    • MaxCoyote

Sounds like you have alot to contribute to something like a town hall meeting. I don't think this event is about you, MJ. It's about the group. You should attend.

  • dennisthetiger

It's hard to tell if this is an issue or a non-issue. And I'm not sure what even prompted that group.NO matter, I'm watching 'em.

    January 10, 2013

    • MabelSyrup

Haha, understandable! Maybe there a library? Feels like a private, big, indoor place would be best but I don't know of anyplace that'd want a huge group of furries XD

      January 11, 2013

    • dennisthetiger

Relena also mentioned a library. The various KCLS branches, by and large, have meeting rooms we can do this in. They just need to be reserved....

      January 11, 2013

  • Relena

What about a library in Seattle? I could always help out and see when there is a reservation available

    1 · January 11, 2013

    • dennisthetiger

I don't know what the SPL branches have in the way of meeting rooms, but KCLS has branches all over with decent rooms. Kingsgate, for the purpose, comes to mind, and is remarkably close to my home....

      January 11, 2013

  • Mix

so location location this will be tricky and will be something that EVERYONE will have to decide on. get a library meeting room sounds best. now its a matter of where. we have furs from olympia and some from like farther north.
seattle could be good. i am not sure however, or we could find somewhere like in renton. a nice medium however sounds best.

    January 11, 2013

  • MaxCoyote

I have some opinions on all this, including this new group. I'll save it for the meetup.

However, I really highly suggest removing the link to Evergreen Furs from this meet up description. It's kinda inappropriate to advertise a rival meetup group ON a Furlife meetup.

    3 · January 11, 2013

    • Fergie

I don't get it. Why does it have to be a rival group? Is it not just a sub group? A smaller group within a larger group? Are not all Washington furs simply that: Washington furs?

Im in on this. Personaly i just hope no huge drama comes between these two groups

    January 11, 2013

    • Mix

there is nothing wrong with making a second fur group :/ its not like its not polite. during the december stuff that was going on with the logo scruff made the group as a just in case because there were quite a few people that were considering a second group being made that wouldnt have to deal with said drama. nothing really was meant to come from it unless that actually happened. and if it hadnt been linked here then no one would have really joined it. i remember i would go to several groups in the past, it wasnt jsut furlife and it still doesnt have to be just furlife.

      1 · January 11, 2013

    • Mix

i love furlife though, and it always will be the main group i go with so long as it remains.

      January 11, 2013

  • KaninZ

If someone wants to create another furry group, more power to you. Please leave the relationship drama where it belongs, amongst the furs involved.
Michael J Fox and all the others who have done so much for the local furry community have taken this group from a handful of local furs to a huge undertaking in terms of time, effort and cat (and otter and fox, etc) herding skills.
As more and more furs join our burgeoning katamari furball there are bound to be splinters and offshoots. It's a natural occurance in group dynamics. Just try to keep the ruffled fur and palace coup attempts to a minimum. The public drama isn't wanted and a coup isn't neccessary as no dues are being collected and there are no mandatory meetings.
I'm not trying to point any fingers, embarrass or judge anyone. All I'm saying is don't burn any bridges and don't try to hijack the furry mafia. If you want to form your own group, best wishes. Just don't try to poison the well as you go.

    4 · January 11, 2013

    • Mix

Well I still think its a good idea to share the fees for having a meetup group. Or even a donation pool period so like more money to go into our more annual meets like wfs or the bbq. As ive said the group is more like a community then a grouo itself and honestly I dont think something could come out of a town hall kind of meeting so long as we are doing it for the community itself

      January 11, 2013

  • Mix

actually if we could make this at a later time for the furs who have work on weekends that would be real swell.

I would definitely like to make this because there's a couple of issues that I think need to be fixed ASAP. There are 2 issues, to be exact, which are a lack of a clear policy and a lack of solid leadership. When I signed up for Furlife, I did agree with the terms and conditions for meetup.com, but where were the terms and conditions for Furlife that I had to agree with? And where's the committee that's supposed to ensure the group runs thoroughly and is COMPLYING WITH NATIONAL, STATE AND LOCAL LAWS? It looks like we're having the same damn problem the U.S. was having before the constitution was written! This is an extremely serious problem that needs to be fixed so it absolutely needs to be discussed at the meeting! I mean...for Christ sake! Look what this problem has done already!

Is this a real thing? Sorry I'm still new and have been honestly to a handful of what I would call "social gatherings," (IE more than 3 people) mostly because I'm so busy with grad school, but like is this a real issue? What attracted me to furry originally is what I heard about mutual exceptance and friendliness. Although every social community has its dark side... ?

    January 10, 2013

    • Fergie

Wow, we'll hmm... Well all I can say, and this is purely from a 23 year old mature young woman, but I think it's rather adult to at least come forward and express a concern for change, and not nessisarily insight a fissure between furry's and friends within the community. Without knowing the history of this fandom and meet group (so maybe I have little place to say) I apaud the will to encourage growth and support between concern members. After all I stand behind my original attraction to furry: a safe community for like-minded individuals to express themselves.

      January 10, 2013

    • Fergie

So we as friends and family should rise and support each other even when not nessisarily agreeing with one another. For that is the very core of mutual symbiosis; to respect and reproach each other with concerns and grow stronger for it. Hopefully the current leaders can meet you and speak with you about your concerns. I would personally expect no less of a loving community like fur. Maybe if u schedual on a date I know I'm not in grad school I could sit in? Which is a legal term for solely observing without comment or judgement. As I've repeated earlier I have little experience to throw commentary regardless. :)

      January 10, 2013

  • MabelSyrup

I don't understand how this is a big drama thing, if anything it's kind of amazing. Our furry group has gotten so large and successful that holding a "Town Hall" meeting would be beneficial, it's not a get-together so we can all point fingers, we're trying to make decisions for the better of the group :3

hoo boy this should get fun... well. i will say i like this group and all. in fact i love it.
now i dont nessicarily agree with some of the leadership decisions on things-this is mostly pertaining to the furlife logo stuff- or as a suiter some of the habits.

i like the idea of several leaders however. as well as chipping in with the fee. not because it gives the sole person power but considering how many members we are furlife is more or less a community and is no longer the small group it used to be. its only fair.

Memeber of this meetup since August 2007. I am satisfied with the way this Meetup is organized and moderated. Thanks MJF for all of your efforts. I am on record encouraging everyone to start their own meetup with whatever spin they want - for some, a council centered structure makes sense. Build it - see who shows up - have fun. I like this Meetup's leadership - the number of years, distances traveled and size of membership speak to the vitallity of the current orgranization. I would prefer that you build something new of your own and attrack your own membership. Without more to read on your position, this topic feels like an attempt to undermine FURLIFE and I take exception.

    Hi

There has been a lot of drama lately, Our group has grown a lot and I feel that our group needs some forum other than an FA journal made by Max Coyote to deal with it all.

I am starting off this email as a conversation for the group to talk about how the group is being managed and who is calling the shots.

I honestly feel the easiest way to moderate the group is to have 5-6 elected moderators, who have the groups best interest in mind. These people would be voted on by the members of the group. They would deal with problems that occur within the Furlife group as well as continue to help the group grow and succeed.

I also feel that since Meet Up charges money monthly for site use; this fee should be payed by the group and not one individual who then can claim sole power and ownership over the group.

    January 10, 2013

    • Sharako

I feel that an election should happen. the people already moderating the site can run for a moderator position, however I do not feel they should get it by default. Any one should be able to run for a moderator position and the top 5-6 people who get the most votes are of equal footing, and moderator capabilities.

I was been banned in the past by the leader of this group for the simple fact of dating his ex. I have also been told that if I return to his house, where meets are sometimes held, that I will have the cops called on me. I have done nothing to deserve any of this. I had to come back with a different screen name. I was told by the current moderators that I was welcome back at Furlife and that if M.J banned me again something would be done about it.

      January 10, 2013

    • Sharako

I feel this is not something a leader should do for the simple fact of dating his ex. I have not caused any harm or problems for M.J, or this group. In fact I have run several BAB meets with Furlife. I want to see this group prosper and grow.

Hopefully we can get the ball rolling to get things more open, friendly and organized

      Sincerely,
      Your Local Cloudy LeoPard, Sharako
