Actually, there was a point in time within the last two or three years where someone had developed an XSS exploit for Hotmail that would send out more emails upon opening the email itself. This was quickly fixed.

And as to how your account was compromised, like you suggested, it was probably the same password you used to login elsewhere attached to your email. The password was probably not stored in raw text, but the hacker could've bruteforced the hash (because most websites nowadays have protection from form bruteforcing attacks by only allowing a certain amount of attempts to login) or they could've use rainbow tables, or a wordlist, or they could've used a dictionary attack, etc.

But I digress. If you haven't gotten around to changing your passwords (for everything associated to that email) yet, I would do so ASAP.

Thanks,
Sprinkles.

"Unknown emails" don't do anything, they just contain raw text, either text itself or just displaying HTML content.  You don't get "hacked" from displaying an email, you have to download an executable attachment from the malicious attacker, or you give up your credentials on a phishing website, neither of which I do. :p

So either I got bruteforced, or my friend suggested that someone hacked some crappy forums that had registered with my email and raw text password stored on the database that happened to be the same one on my email.

Iunno, I'm a hacker myself, I never get phished, so I assume I got bruteforced.
