NYC Future Salon Little Bigs: An Afternoon of Utopias & Dystopias

This location is shown only to members

"Little Bigs" are back!

'Little Bigs' is a format for presenting big ideas in a very short period of time. Presenters are limited to 5 minutes and 5 slides to share their big idea with the audience, then we ask questions and discuss at the end of all the presentations.

On Saturday, July 19th we will hear from NYC Future Salon members on their versions of optimistic Utopias and pessimistic Dystopias of the near future. The themes and the topics will vary, so this meeting has no specific theme.

This is our current list of presenters:

Carol Pawlowski
War and Peace 2020

Joe Plotkin
Openness of the Internet

Arnell Dowret
Spirituality for the Future

Shane Hope
(Visual art scenarios)

Mike Ignatowski
Apocalypse or Sustainability?

Here are the rules:

  • 5 slides, 5 minutes (maybe 7 minutes!)
  • Then we have Q&A after all the presenters are finished

Topic Utopian or Dystopian-themed scenarios of a future world centered around any topic (e.g. media, medicine, war, climate change, industry, etc).

Timeline Any year between 2015 - 2045 (if you want to venture further, let Garry know!)

Formats
Storytelling in your own voice
or using "future artifacts",
or via Powerpoint (images, audio, text, videos).

Be creative, plausible and engaging.

First come, first served. If you are interested in presenting send Garry an email ([masked])

Thanks to Carol for coming up with this great topic!

So will it be a Utopia?

or a Dystopia?

Joey, Thanks for your questions-- (see overview) 'little bigs' is a format for presenting ideas that limits the time/number of slides of each presenter so we hear from many people in a short time period. And for this program, I wouldn't go too deep into pure definitions of Utopian/Dystopian. We're looking for plausible, engaging stories of different futures. Good, bad or both. Meant to be thoughtful and engaging less deeply philosophical given the format. And yes, there is never an 'end state'

Why does the image for a dystopia look like my hometown? Are we already there?

Heh. Maybe I should find a picture of zombies devouring humans? Would that count as a dystopia?

I'm glad this was my introduction to the group. A whole bunch of different ways of looking at the largest scope we know, all of humanity and its strengths and weaknesses. The speakers were wonderful and the discussion was very inclusive.

The format highlighted what an interesting and varied group this is. It was evident that there were many smart and creative people here who have carefully thought about what the future may hold. The discussions were very stimulating.

Informative and ecclectic viewpoints on eutopias and dystopias.

There was a great group present at this meet up; I gave one of the mini-presentations. Of the other presentations I’m afraid the two “artistic” ones must have been over my head- I honestly am not at all sure what either of them were communicating. But perhaps those presentations were better understood by other attendees; I’d be curious about that. The reason I don’t know the answer to that question is because after the presentation I spent the next 2 ½ hours completely engaged in excellent and dynamic conversation with attendees as several of us went out for dinner together. As wide ranging as the conversation was we never did discuss those presentations that I failed to get. This is my first experience with this group and it will not be my last. I look forward to seeing everyone again in the fall. Many thanks to Garry and Ella for doing a wonderful job organizing!
