World Food Day - Millions Against Monsanto

This is a nation wide movement for the right to know what's in your food and a push for labeling what's GMO...
http://organicconsume... If we can get a good number of people interested, we should get together and set up shop at a local grocer that day to help inform the public about being an informed consumer and to support their right to know what's in their shopping carts. I've added our group to the site, which will hopefully bring more like-minded people our way to join in & make a difference.

I think a regular flyering at grocery stores would be a good thing.

I would be into that. I talk to people all the time at Earth origins who also don't seem to know much about GMO/Monsanto. Maybe Earth Origins would be a good location too.

Ya, that one lady that came out, Barbara was her name, I believe, suggested that we have sign waves like this about once a month. I'm game for that considering the number of people who had no clue what a GMO even was. SAD.

Hi Kelly. Was it only you and Ilene Sun morning? It sounds like other groups were meeting at different places. The more I talk to different people the more I realize how many people are uninformed re Monsanto/GMO. I'm disappointed more people didn't show. But all you can do is try. I really wish I could have been there.

There were at least 12 of us at 34th and Archer. I spent a good bit of the morning trying to recruit "the Occupation" to our location, but that ball had so much momentum there was no stopping it. We passed out a lot of the OCA leaflets, but didn't get any signatures.

Thank you for doing this, everyone. I'm sorry I couldn't be there (and that I didn't take my name off the list)...I was there in spirit.

thanks Ilene for coming out!! I would've been very discouraged if at least one person didn't show. Maybe better luck next time.

Ilene - At the top of the page below the title of the group there are several menu tabs. The very last tab called "More" when you roll over it has the option to choose files...the flyer is in there.
Sharon - Co-op would be a perfect place to post. don't go out of your way, Alachua is a long ways to come post at the co-op!!

Hi Kelly, I like the flyer. Do you think the Food Co-Op on Main street would be a good place to hang a flyer?

Hi Kelly, Was out and about today and I found a wonderful seed selection at Garden Gate on NW 43rd street. They have a whole selection of heirloom seeds...I bought the last of the red kale so if you need a few seeds let me know.

Hi Ilene, It was fun meeting you on Saturday. I'm sorry I won't be able to make the demonstration...I've already reg for a class on that weekend...good luck with everything.

I uploaded a flyer to help promote the event. If you get an inkling to print a few and post them at a couple places that you might be heading to, that would be helpful. I'm going to post up at Earth Origins and on campus boards in the next couple days...I will head to the Occupy Gainesville event to partake as well as pass out some flyers for our event.

no permits needed per code enforcement!! yay!! We must not block the sidewalks nor roads.

    1 · October 10, 2011

  • kelly c.

awesome....I'm gonna call city code enforcement to see if I need to purchase a permit, which is a bit ridiculous sounding, but I'd rather not have the cops breathing down our necks. "Hi, city, how do you restrict 1st ammendment in Gainesville? Do I need to pay $$ to exercise my right to free speech and assembly?"

It's just horrifying what is happening to our food! I didn't realize how bad it has gotten. Very scary stuff. Thanks for the video. I will send it to my friends.

good advice, Ilene, thanks! And yes, we should schedule a meetup to make signs and do some planning / prepping for those who are interested...I'll get on that!

    September 28, 2011

Sorry I can't participate. I am attending a CEU couse on this weekend. If you need help making signs let me know. Maybe I can help with the materials

    September 28, 2011

  • kelly c.

So, with that being said, we'll need to make signs and I can also try to gather some pamphlets and such to hand to passersby - such as the Non-GMO shopping guide...

OK, so here's my thoughts...I originally thought, hey maybe we should sit in front of a Publix or some other chain grocer, however I have serious doubts they're going to let us sit out front and deter people from buying the majority of their products. So, then I thought, maybe Mother Earth (now Earth Origins) would let us, but I think we'd be preaching to the choir. Maybe just getting on the corner of a major intersection like University and 13th or 34th and Archer and have signs.
