Deep Dive: Mastering 2D Game Art in Photoshop

There are plenty of tutorials on the web for learning the basics of Photoshop, but making games comes with it's own set of unique challenges that are rarely addressed. Even experienced PS users can run into bottlenecks when working with sprite animations and seamless tile maps for the first time.

This deep dive will focus on the features of Photoshop that are most useful for creating 2D game art assets, including ways to speed up or automate the non-creative (but necessary) production and exporting processes. Plus, there will be some useful tips for customizing or creating tool presets to suit your particular project. Be sure to bring a laptop with Photoshop to load custom scripts and follow along!

Topics will include: resolution and grid setup, using layer comps for animation and recoloring, smart objects, slices, adding scripts and presets, and customizing brushes/textures for seamless tiling.


Bio

Chris Hernandez is a freelance graphic designer from Dallas who likes making video games more than he likes working in advertising. He is currently developing Super Rad Raygun under Majesco's Midnight City label, and is also a founding member of Studio Mercato in NYC.     Heya, presenter here:

    @Desmond, I'm going to be skipping over a lot of the basics for this course - if you're not familiar with things like the UI layout, the basics of the tools, or how layers and selections work, you might be a little lost. That said - there's still some value to knowing what can be done, so that once you do have the basics down you'll know where to go from there.

    @Tamaru - I'm mostly going to be tackling 2D art problems in this session. There's definitely some tricks and tips that will work with 3D texturing, but I won't be focusing on that specifically. You don't necessarily have to have a laptop to follow along, but since I'll be focusing on the details of photoshop workflows, it might be a little harder to follow along if you're not seeing things on your own screen.
