Deep Dive: How To Break Into Indie Games

NOTE: Attendees must RSVP here

Game design education has never been better, especially in New York City. But you might not want to put life on hold for two (or more) years in order to learn the craft and enter the industry. In this talk, I lay out some of the ways in which I've rolled my own self-guided curriculum for game design without quitting my full-time job. You will be guided through the education, tools, and inspiration necessary to succeed.

Michael Hansen is a web developer moonlighting as an independent game designer. He is currently building KOLLAPSE, a mobile puzzler in the vein of Stickets and Triple Town. He is also developing a roguelike based on the Borges short story "The Library of Babel" with the Brooklyn Game Ensemble. In his free time he loves to cook and suffer defeat repeatedly at the hands of his girlfriend in board games.

I was not able to attend, but it sounds great. Are you planning events for those interested in careers in both the business and creative?

I wasn't able to make it - any chance there might be slides or video available?

Provided some great resources and advice for people just beginning their foray into game development. Experienced some frustration in finding the new address, which is now 11 Times Square. It's actually on the corner of 8th Ave and 41st St, not 42nd. Also, they close the front door to the Microsoft section of the building after 7:30. Since nobody provided a guest list to the front desk receptionists in the lobby, I was delayed even further, arriving only in time for the Q&A at the end.

Excellent advice for the "inspiration period" of game design. The portions on time management were priceless.
