Welcome to the Berkeley Lesbian Moms Meet-up Group

Our Mission: We are a group of Gay Moms from Berkeley, and nearby areas, who have or are expecting children. Most of us are couples but some are single moms too. We are a friendly, welcoming, diverse group of parents looking for a positive environment for our children and a means for them meet other children from families like theirs. Our endeavors are primarily non-political and much more geared toward social interaction.

Our Origin: The BLM Meet-up originated over in June of 2007, but my partner & I just became the organizers in February of 2008 after the founder decided to step aside. All members at the time were sent an email informing us that our group would become dissolved unless another person took it over. We hadn't ever lead a group before, and in fact we had never attended any of the meetings organized before. Anyway, we thought we'd pay the dues for the first month and arrange a meeting to get a feel for the folks involved and if we didn't click or if the members were as apathetic as we'd previously been, then maybe we should disband.

Our first meeting was very casual on a late Saturday afternoon at Aquatic Park in Berkeley. We felt there would be no risk in making the effort as it was so close to our home & our daughter loves the swings, so what the heck. Well we were pleasantly surprised. ...

Our Past Meet-ups (most recent first)...

SF Pride Parade Unofficial Meetup:
(Our 5th event) 6 known attendees, 6 others that we heard attended but we did not meet up with...
We met up with Michelle, Cindy & Ro for a very fun day. For the past few years the parade organizers have created a kids/family only section that includes a fenced off playground and well monitored safety (no attendance without a kid and each child/parent name tag match).

Send us a shout if you attended & share your favorite parts.

Memorial Day BBQ Potluck:
(Our 4th event) 29 attendees, our most successful meet-up yet!
Fellow members Sue, Nicole & Evan, whose backyard is behind ours, kindly offered to co-host our BBQ Potluck. We featured the 'meat cooking grill' and they did fish & veggie burgers. It was a great combined space with their lovely landscaped yard full of flowers, hammock & picnic table space complementing our semi-shaded sitting space.

The guest/members were great. We got to spend time with some new friends met at previous meet-ups, some folks we've known for awhile & finally got to meet members that we've known only in name & profile. We had a yummy assortment of food, everything from chicken potstickers, and an amazing potato salad to homemade baked beans.

The kids all seemed to enjoy each others company and were all really adorable. It felt great to have so many kids of gay moms all together. Thanks to everyone for all their effort to make this a great event and thanks to Michelle for becoming our official meet-up photographer!

Oakland FairyLand:
(Our 3rd event) 19 attendees, in a heat wave...
This was the first meet-up that we met Cindy, Michelle & Roan, born 5 days earlier than our Soline, and we totally hit it off. We also met Jen & her 16 month old Quinn for the first time, a very nice single mom from the Oakland Hills. Julie, Claudia and their beautiful daughter Eliana brought friends. It was a very hot day and we had a good time walking around the park but trying to stay in the shade. We had a picnic of snacks afterwards and the kids got to play together on the picnic blanket. This was a low key but enjoyable event.

The Oakland Zoo: (Our 2nd event) 18 attendees, an amazing weather day...the zoo ended up being packed...

This was a really fun event and we'll probably schedule another zoo meet-up in the future. We met several new members at our 2nd event, including Denise and her children, Lin & the twins, Meghan & Bennett & it was the first meet-up that friends Sue, Nicole & Evan were able to attend. We started out with a picnic of snacks in the grassy section of the children's section of the zoo and then we walked around exploring & visiting animals.

Aquatic Park: (Our 1st event) 11 attendees
This was our first meet-up with Lulu & I as meeting organizers. We arranged to meet on a Saturday afternoon at Aquatic Park. We met up at the swings. At this first meeting we met Julie, Claudia & adorable Eliana, Ellen & her charming son, Xander & Bridget, Ghazaleh & their beautiful daughter, Sabine.

Everyone was very friendly and approachable and we decided at that meeting that we'd like to continue the group for future events.
