Fwd: Guilford County Foxes and The Greensboro Vegan Meetup Group

Hey, everyone,

Just as an FYI, there's a request being considered before the county commissioner, this Thursday, to allow for unlimited trapping of foxes in the Guilford County area. There are humane issues and some potential environmental repercussions associated with the bill. Jenny Edwards, with the SPCA, has a good, brief explenation of what's at stake, below.

If you have even a few minutes to stop by the county commissioners meeting, this Thursday, at 5:30 pm your support would be much appreciated.

Thank you!
~ Jen.

Hi Jen,

I'm a volunteer with the=2 0SPCA of the Triad, and we are dealing
with an issue that has an environmental cross-over. A request
is pending before the Guilford County Commissioners to allow un-
limited trapping of foxes. There is an economic incentive for
the trappers--foxes sell for $75 to $25 apiece depending on the
market and use.

We are concerned about this issue on several fronts. One is
that it could lead to the decimation of the fox population in
Guilford County. Foxes are, as you know, a key species in
control of mice and other rodents.

I would be very grateful if you could let the Greensboro Vegans
know that there is an online petition:
http://tinypupcleanup.com/redfoxpetition/

Also, we are desperately seeking warm bodies to sit in the
County Commissioner meeting THIS Thursday evening as two SPCA
representative ask the Commissioners to reconsider allowing un-
limited fox trapping. This should not take long. Please urge
your members to come to the Old Courthouse at 301 W. Market
Street, GSO in the upstairs meeting room on May 7th at 5:30 pm.

We have found that a room full of people at the Commissioners
meeting can change their minds about an issue. Thank you so
much for any support you can lend this effort.

Oh, just so youll know from the humane perspective: trapped
foxes are used to train hunting dogs, during which the a nimals
attempt to flee the pursuing dogs, clearly exhibiting that they
are in a state of terror. There is no escape during a canned
hunt; so the foxes are ultimately mauled to death. If the
trapping process damages the fox too much for a canned hunt,
they are sold to furriers at a reduced rate of $25.

We are the only people between the trappers and the fate of
these foxes. We will embrace any support from the Greensboro
Vegans with much gratitude.

Thank you so much and please pass my email along to anyone.
Jenny
