Bringing Google App Engine to a Cluster Near You

  • March 7, 2013 · 6:30 PM

Our next event, is from the creators of a new cool concept and future of Application Development platform called Appscale

Date: March 7th, Thu, 6:30 PM @ 12930 Worldgate Dr, Herndon, VA 20170

Appscale Team

Chandra Krintz, CTO
Margaret Van Sicklen, Marketing Director
Woody Rollins, CEO

Recent advances in cloud platforms (platforms-as-a-service or PaaS) have significantly simplified cloud use by providing developers with complete software/runtime stacks for execution of their web-accessible applications (apps) and services. PaaS systems offer programmatic access to scalable, distributed, and fault tolerant cloud services which eliminates the need for developers to write or deploy their own and enabling them to focus on their innovation.

In this presentation, we overview a new cloud platform called
AppScale. AppScale provides the benefits of PaaS but is unique in that it emulates, using open source technologies, what is arguably the "de facto" standard of public PaaS: Google App Engine. API-compatibilitywith App Engine means that any of the one million active App Engine apps today execute over AppScale without modification. This, in combination with the fact that AppScale executes (automatically deploys) anywhere a virtual machine can be instantiated (a laptop, an on-premise cluster, a local data center, Amazon EC2 or other IaaS), means that AppScale gives developers choice across all of the most popular deployment options available today, with no code rewrite.

    Hi Everyone
Margaret From AppScale here. We are continuing the forward push with our market validation. I am in charge of finding others who use Google App Engine in production. Not a sales call, as we have nothing to sell, just want to talk with users about their GAE experience.
Any info on who uses(or used) GAE in production would be a great help!

The information presented by Appscale, and how this open source project has prevailed to support industry use cases, was so worth the attendance. Thanks, Chida for uploading the photos on the presentation slides shown by Chandra. Anyone who was not able to make the meeting can still easily follow-on by referencing the content on those slides, and just visiting the Appscale website.

Thinking back to the bad old days of relational data, the time and expense involved in making sense of our information, these new data management technologies allow people to muscularly work with their data to create new value.

Free pizza, free sandwiches, free beer, free t-shirts, free books, free soda, charming and knowledgeable presenter - Chandra. What's not to love.

I suspect this is a model case of taking a University project private but Open Source, and with a credible business plan. I am one of many who jumped on the Google merry-go-round early and always had the nagging feeling, I didn't know how to get off. Chandra made that road map credible.
