Spring forward to the Open Source Automotive Platforms and Big Data on the Cloud

Welcome to GDG East Bay meeting page. We typically meet on the first Monday monthly, and there is a special quarterly Industry Innovation session on the 3rd Monday of the third month at each quarter.

We are delight to see you in our upcoming meetings. Please feel free to invite your friends and co-workers to learn and share your expertise.

We are taking nominations of speakers and sponsors. Please e-mail me for your suggestions. Thank you very much!

Vroom, vroom... that is the sound of gas-powered automobile. GDG East Bay is very happy to have TJ Giuli of Ford introducing the OpenXC, which is a research software/hardware platform that exposes internal vehicle data through an Android service to us.

TJ recommended to move this event from our December 2012 meeting to March 2013. Here is a URL on a report about the OpenXC On January 8th 2013 at International Consumer Electronics Show (CES):

More information about OpenXC can be found:

TJ will bring a Ford automobile to show us how the technology works.

After the break, Gurumurthy Yeleswarapu of swatcloud will give us a very detailed coverage of Big Data, Cloud and Mobile via user cases.

Note:

GDG East Bay will collect $3.00, exact change preferred, to cover meeting expenses.

Sessions' Description:

Open Source Automotive Platforms (TJ Giuli, Ford)

OpenXC is a research software/hardware platform that exposes internal vehicle data through an Android service, allowing apps to augment the kinds of experiences they can provide both in the vehicle as well as outside the vehicle.  I will give technical details on how OpenXC works, some prototype apps Ford has been experimenting with, and talk about how experimenters can get involved.

IT: Big D

ata , Cloud and Mobile (Gurumurthy Yeleswarapu, swatcloud) For us in the San Francisco Bay area, there is not an hour pass that these words do not come to our attention: Big Data, Cloud and Mobile. Let Gurumurthy give us a comprehensive coverage of these exciting areas via presentation and live demo of how to integrated them.

Speakers' Bios:

TJ Giuli leads Ford’s newly-established Silicon Valley Lab in downtown Palo Alto.  His research interests lie in mobile computing and secure, privacy-preserving vehicular software architectures. His recent work involves architecting research software platforms to enable third-party software development on cars.  TJ has had the pleasure of working with many gifted students while teaching classes at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor on automotive software design, and led the technical effort for the American Journey 2.0 project (http://makezine.com/americanjourney2.0/).  He received his Ph.D. in computer science from Stanford University in 2005.

Gurumurthy Yeleswarapu is a 20-year veteran in the high tech sector. He founded a couple of companies (Electronics Inc. and e-Colt Systems Inc) before SwatCloud. He worked as technologist and business development roles over past several years! Networking, Security, Cloud are areas of Gurumurthy's interest. He got couple of patents.

If you’re an IEEE member please consider helping me. I’m submitting a grant proposal to the IEEE towards development of an Android based “cell phone spectrometer” system that could be used in developing countries to detect copper, lead and zinc soil contamination from processing electronic waste. I need to quickly gather a team of five more IEEE members before submitting the proposal. Ideally you might lend some help in writing an Android app, but if you’re willing to help even a little (perhaps in an advisory capacity) please let me know and I’ll give you more information. Thanks, Ben Burford. [masked]
