How does a whole day learning and hacking on Maps for Android sound ?

As part of http://www.startupspring2013.org/ we are hosting an Android Hackathon at Google Sydney.

For Beginners - talks and code-labs will guide you to a working Android app using the native Maps v2 API. How good is that !?!

For Experienced Android Devs - a good chance to focus on the native Android v2 API and get something working in 24 hrs.

- Talk : Google Maps for Android (Jan Felix Schmakeit - Google)
- Group and Project formation
- Go home and sleep

Sat 5 Oct - 10am - 6pm
- Beginners Track : Start with an Android Maps Code Lab and then join a group and hack away for the rest of the day.
- Experienced Track : Hack away on your chosen project.
- End of day showcase and prizes.

Too short, but still a great experience. Thanks to the Googlers who came in on their weekend to facilitate and arrange lunch etc. Thanks to Andy for your guidance.

Great presentations from Jan Felix Schmakeit - Google. It was fun event with plenty of food. As Android Beginner learned a lot of ADT bundled, Google Maps v2 API and Android Maps Code Lab. Definitely will attend Android Hackathon events coming up!

Thanks! Just what I was looking for. :) Sounds like it was an event to be at! Such a shame I was rendered inoperable by the Flu and had just coincidentally and inconveniently sold my aging HDD laptop :( (Upgrading to an SSD laptop pretty soon though :D)

I hope there are more of these events coming up! Thanks again.

The talk was great, very interesting. It's a fun event, I definitely recommend it. I learned a lot of new things about Android. Thanks for your time and sponsoring the event!

@John Is it possible to attend the event only on Friday (for the talk). Long weekend plans are in place so won't be able to join on Sat.

Unfortunately, I need to rollback my RSVP. Pls post the slides. Have fun.

Yes, slides and/or photos would be greatly appreciated. Does GDG - Sydney have any active Social Media pages to collaborate this information? Thank you.

Unfortunately, I was unable to make it to the Friday session, can I still drop-in on the Saturday one?

I am in the Goolge like past meetups , but no one is here. Is it in another location?

    Hey,

What do people think are the recommended pre-requisites for this (especially for Saturday)? ie. what things should we have ready in order to be the most effective?

For example, at the last one, there were a few people caught up on a code sharing repositories instead of hacking code. Important stuff, but with such a limited amount of time, probably not the most productive. Perhaps people could suggest recommended online repositories and add-ins for people to install and to brush up on prior to the event. If a team want to use something else, then they can decide on the day of course, just after ideas at this stage.

IDE. Given that this event spans Beginners, it might be worth reminding people to have their IDE downloaded/installed and the latest ADK installed.

Nooo! Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it. Have fun! I would love if some material could be provided and shared for the rest of us.

Just had to withdraw :( Really hope some of the material from the day, and some of the example apps that are created could be shared so I can learn from this!

When you say beginner/expert: What constitutes a beginner? Trying to gauge which group I fall in.

I'm checking this page more than 20 times a day hoping to see my name in the attending list instead of waiting!

Is "Beginners" suitable for someone who codes, but has zero experience of mobile development or even Java development?

    September 19, 2013

    • John S.

The code lab is pitched at beginners but assumes Java and Android familiarity. If you come prepared with your laptop with the Android SDK installed and working then it might be worthwhile.

Thanks John. Just realised I can't make this date. Is it possible to get slides and code examples after the event so I can follow this later?
