Join Good Eats and Meets for  a Truly Unique Trip...Development of Private Entrepreneurship through the Culinary Arts in Cuba

Cuba. The island Christopher Columbus called the most beautiful place he had ever seen. Of course he said that about every island he discovered but the exciting thing about Cuba is its intrigue and mystique to the world! Join us as we explore the mystery and experience the excitement of the largest island in the Caribbean and the spirit of its endearing people. Join in the swirl of dance, music and romance. Dine at restaurants offering authentic Cuban cuisine, go back in time riding in vintage cars of the 50's and 60's. Visit the countryside on the outskirts of the metropolitan area of Havana. Taste the sweetness of a real Cuban cigar rolled especially for you. Cuba is different from the rest of the world, isolated from western influences since the Cuban Revolution in 1959 yet still offering a culture that is uniquely Cuba. This is an adventure you will long remember!

Arriving on Thursday, October 9th and for the next 5 days, we will meet individuals who thanks to recent changes in the Cuban economic model have discovered their entrepreneurial style by establishing private restaurants and rediscovering their pre-revolution culinary history – a delectable mix of Spanish, African and Caribbean influences.

Starting on Thursday evening, we will enjoy a family style Cuban creole meal at La Barraca at the Hotel Nacional with sweeping views of Havana’s famous Malecon. This historic hotel, built in 1930 by a New York architecture firm, has seen the likes of world dignitaries, famous celebrities and current leadership of Cuba.

The next three days will be spent exploring other areas of interest such as Hemingway’s home from 1939 to 1960, Finca Vigia, as well as Old Havana where the architecture of the buildings from the 1400’s through Colonial times, will take your breath away! Along the way, we will take part in interactive lunches and dinners at Paladars, which are privately owned restaurants. These visits will inspire you, as we will see what can be created with limited resources of tools, seasonings and other cooking ingredients. We will also visit recently established urban farm areas where in decades past, agriculture was not possible due to various inefficiencies and difficulty in transportation. Thanks to the interest and perseverance from locals in the area, these tree species have seen a resurgence of usage and popularity in the local cuisine and are now thriving. We will eat dinner where the ingredients have been chosen out of the fields….a true food-to-table experience!

By meeting and interacting with the local people during our explorations, you will learn how they live and work very hard to take care of their families in an environment that is ever-changing, challenging and yet always persevering through the many difficulties they face.

In addition to the culinary experiences you will enjoy, we will visit the Muraleando Project where Manuel (Manolo) Díaz Baldrich and Ernesto Quirch Paz began teaching art workshops on Saturdays to the neighborhood kids since 2001. The project moved into the streets where the students painted murals, beautifying and learning to take pride in caring for their community.

With the history of Cuba as our backdrop and the experience of “modern” day living, this will be the trip of a lifetime to a country that still holds that mystique that was seen by Christopher Columbus in the 15th century and is still ever so present today.
