Meet the New Zealanders (Kiwis) then find Phil's

  • Aug 3, 2014 · 6:00 AM

We have a fellow GeoCacher coming from down under to cache in San Diego during the month of August. The goal is to meet for breakfast then head out to Mt Laguna and find Phil's Memorial Cache (GC5B). So even if you don't want to trek out to Laguna Lake, come meet the Kiwis and arrange your own GeoCaching tour so you can share your favorite San Diego Caches.

Agenda: Breakfast 6am-7, Leave for Mt Laguna 7:15am, Arrive Mt Laguna Lake Parking 8:20am, Hike around and find Phil, Return before noon.

Goal 5 Miles, with 20+ Caches along the path. eMail me if you want the GPX track.

One thing I love about the San Diego GeoCaching community - Experience helps and I have received some excellent advise. A better approach can be made with plenty of street parking from the south. You can park between GC1XX3Z and the trail head (N 32°[masked]'  W 116°[masked]') that leads to GC1H0MG. From there the path leads north up to Phil's and we can work our way back.  Also it's a bit shorter. (Thanks Mike!)

Oh I am having fun with my 64st...  I was able to create an "Garmin Adventure" for Sunday.  You can find it at http://adventures.garmin.com/en-US/by/jcfca/meetup-to-find-phils-and-tour-mt-laguna-lakes/#.U9cciFYY54w

Looks like they have a download option as well.  Let me know if it works for you.

For those of you who are going to meet us at the Starting point.  Google claims it to be a 50 minute drive.  So if you are at the starting point at 8AM.  We should be arriving within five or ten minutes.   See you all on Sunday.

The National Park Service is asking for National Forest Adventure Daily Passes ($5.00) for each car - So I picked up four today.  They sell the the passes at REI and Big 5 as well.  It's a $100.00 fine if you don't display the pass.

As I get more information I will update the site.

Love the all the comments and suggestions!

Any one want to meet me at N[masked] W[masked]? It is the parking lot at Lauguna Campground, I would like to leave my car there and only hike half of the route since I have already done most of the caches that are now on the list. You can drop me an email and I will give you my phone number. We would have to meet about 8am to make the 8:20 meet up at the other end.

    Hey John,
I think I need to go simply to say I found Phil!! Can drive or will carpool and not opposed to caching on the way back. See you Sunday.

I don't trust my wheels lately all the way to Mt Laguna so if I could beg a ride from the event out to Phil's and back that would be great. Shared fuel cost and all that. Also always interested in caching along the way back.

Can you post a link to the GPX track or file?

    July 9, 2014

    • John F.

Good Morning, I have a shared folder at dropbox.com, but I would need your eMail, but if I have your eMail I could send it directly... So drop me an eMail at jc fowler at pacbell dot net with the correct punctuation and I will repond with the kmz file that I traced out.

      July 10, 2014

  • John F.

I have you covered... So two available for other people. I forgot to mention, the Store opens at 9 am, and the visitor center opens at 10am.
