Geo Lightning Talks

Hello Geogeeks,

It has been sometime since we had "GeoMeetup Member Presentations" (aka Geo Lightning Talks). The format is simple, you get 5-10 minutes (based on availability) to present about a Geo-topic of your choice. The catch is that it needs to be interesting to the group and not a blatant sales presentation :)

The lightning talks for this GeoMeetup:

GlobalForestWatch.org - Open Data and the Future of Forest Monitoring  - Robin Kraft

• "Hello, Excuse Me, Can You Tell Me Where 'Inbound' Is?" - Eric Theise

• GIS applications for real estate and economic development - Stefan Martinovic

• Mozilla Location Services - Chris Peterson, Mozilla

• Global Basemap Refresh - Olivier Ricordel , Digital Globe

Farmradio.org - Chris Nicholas

• SimCity for the Real World - Robert Matthews

• EasyTileServer - Jesse Crocker

• AllTrails DEM Server - Marcus Needham, AllTrails

Transit Stop Wayfinding - Matt Caywood

• WhirlyViz - A free geo viz tool for iOS - Steve Gifford.

See you soon!

- Ragi

Great seeing everyone at the meetup. I really enjoyed the format, all presentations and questions.

If you want sample imagery from DigitalGlobe, check out the free trial of our new Global Basemap Refresh offering for the US http://www.digitalglobe.com/all50 There is a cool interactive coverage map on the site too.

My talk was scuttled by a VGA input problem, so I put together the slides in video form:

Would be great if videostreaming the presentations can be arranged, for many more of us to watch at least the presentations in these wonderful meetups. I agree there is nothing like being there in person, for the networking and more. Being in south Bay; sometimes, it is not possible to make a useful meetup event in SF.

This was my first GeoMeetup. I enjoyed the presentations, space, and conversation. Was hoping for a more even mix of tool makers/tech developers and content applications (so more things like the GlobalForestWatch site and the Farm Radio project). The q&a after each was informative and helped me understand the community's interests and experience better.

Very nice presentations. Nice to learn abut the Farm Radio Project and "Reality Radio" with a purpose, Digital Globe was nice for me to see, the product and offering growth are lovely. Thank you again for another winner, Ragi. :)

Great evening, as usual! I wish these meetups happened more frequently, but I hear Ragi has some hot mapping startup so I guess he's saturated :)

Does anyone know the projector status at Code for America? Will it accept an HDMI connector?

I'm a program manager at Mozilla and I'd like to share a short talk about Mozilla's experiences and plans for geolocation in Firefox and Firefox OS.

I'm one of the founders of Gaia GPS, and I mostly come for the chit chat. I like to learn about people's work in map technology, and to meet new people who are in the business.

I am never disappointed by the presentations or conversations at Geo-Meetups!

I just started a new meetup for folks interested in helping code new features for a crowdfunding platform serving the humanitarian community. I just realized that we'll need some help with GIS and mapping so I'm joining your group. Check out ours at: Beehive Crowdfunding Platform Developers and supporters

Hi Brent, Sounds very interesting and exciting. I'd love to understand you envision applying GIS to your crowdfunding platform. I work for Esri, and we have an office in the city, so let us know if you're interested in chatting.

      February 17, 2014

    • Brent P.

Thanks, I would really like that! Feel free to email me at [masked] and we can set a day. I am familiar with ESRI, you guys are real pioneers emerging GIS.
