GeoMeetup - Member Show & Tell GeoPresentations

It is about time we did another one of these!

Last year, we did a User Presentation meeting where people showed the projects they had been working on. It was great. So let's repeat that!

People can get a short period time (divided among the presenters) to show a project they have been working. The simple rule is that this is not a platform for people to pitch their startup (there are other venues for that), but a way for you to explain some cool geo-related technology/side project.

Currently we have presentation for the following topics:

- Data Visualization for Sacramento San Joaquin Bay Delta (Amye Osti)

- Recent Explorations in Dynamic Mapping (Sha Hwang)

SFMTA Realtime Monitoring (Zach Erbe)

Tracking deforestation in near real time using free NASA data and Hadoop (Robin Kraft)

If you have a presentation - side project - you would like to show, please send me some info so we can add you to the list.

There was a diversity in the presentations showing how geographic data can improve our understanding of local and global processes. I look forward to more but I also see there was some want to dig a bit deeper; to discuss techniques and share lessons learned that may be of help to those in the audience and even to those presenting.

I am sorry that a health issue made it difficult to attend last night. I love the focus of the group, and the locaiton of this meeting

Tamara, not sure what you mean by boundaries. But a simple bounding box with min_lon, min_lat, max_lon, max_lat might help. When I read a GTFS file I have been sorting first by lat then by lon. I have a simple algorithm to find the closest stop but it is slower than O(log n) since I have to search O(n) left and right once I find the closest by lat.

    What do mean by boundries?

If there is time, I would like to discuss current methods for creating boundaries using user points/nodes or third party data sets.

In case theres a good Wifi connex there & someone has a laptop with a webcam (both pretty high probability) could you create a ustream account (free), click "Go Live" topright and then "Start Broadcast" button and then post a message here with the channelname (you can pick) ? Thats free and minus a few audience side advertisements quite usable ! ( I wish meetup already had this "remote attendee" function integrated...)

Can't make it, but I would love to see Zach's presentation. I am currently developing GTFS Read n Show for VTA here in Santa Clara. Real-time tracking is a dream of mine for now that would be awesome to implement.

Wasn't planning to, but it may be a good idea

Quick question - is this going to be livestreamed - I am under time constraints but would love to be able to see the demos...Perhaps someone can point their webcam at the speakers & UStream or Qik ?

Ragi, I sent you a topic. Did you get it?
