Santa Claus Versus St. Nikolaus

In the past few weeks, the catholic Bonifatiuswerk group from Berlin as well as "Der Bund der Deutschen Katholischen Jugend (BDKJ") have been requesting for weihnachtsmannfreie Zonen (Santa Claus-free zones). The reason? They claim that Santa Claus is "inhaltsleer und oberflächlich" (devoid of substance and superficial) and merely a tool for commercialism. He is overshadowing the more charitable figure St. Nicholaus, they explain, and to many kids even blurring the difference between these two Christmas figures. Some prominent German figures have already jumped on the anti-Santa-image bandwagon. What do you think? Is this totally ridiculous or do these catholics have a point?
