I am a historian and an oil painter. I work as a historian for an agency in NYC and do some adjunct teaching at Yale. My homes have included West Virginia, Michigan, and Massachusetts -- before coming to New York in 2010. I am of German ancestry.
Currently, my German only goes one-way. I studied German in high school (and forgot it), again in college (and forgot it once more), and then studied it a third time to pass one of the foreign language requirements for my doctorate. This most recent experience with German began about ten years ago. Since passing my exam (reading and translation), I have continued to read German and to listen almost daily to German language podcasts. My reading level is good (for someone who does not actually speak the language) -- but my speaking ability is very, very little. I read history and physics (for fun) and have difficulty speaking as well as a small child. I want to change this. I have a passion for German. It is my ancestral language and an important language for my research. I want to become fluent in every respect. Nevertheless, to be honest, one of my challenges is that I am very shy to speak.
It was recommended to me by Meetup.com based upon my interests.
