Intro to Python

Want to learn programming fundamentals in a language that you can use to build websites, program robots, visualize data, run servers, and make art? In Introduction to Python, a new 4 week GDI course, you'll learn just that!

Python powers some of the world's most popular websites and apps, like Google, reddit, Pinterest and Instagram.

Join us for GDI NYC's first Introduction to Python course, designed for women who have very limited or no programming experience. During this interactive workshop, we'll explore the basic components of a programming language: data types, functions, conditional statements and loops. We'll mix lecture and practice, and we'll work through lots of problems together. You'll leave the workshop with several tested tutorials to work through on your own.

Class 1: Intro to Python | Wed. Oct. 23rd, 7-9PM
Class 2: Structured Programming: Functions, Loops, Conditionals | Oct. 30, 7-9PM
Class 3: Intro to data structures | Nov. 6th, 7-9PM
Class 4: Using Python to Crawl and Scrape the Web | Nov. 13, 7-9pm

We'll spend part of the workshop helping you set up a development environment, so there's no need to install software ahead of time. Just bring your laptop and come prepared to write your first lines of Python code.

Anyone interested in attending an app bootcamp class starting in January? I took half of it last year but had to drop off because of Sandy. I highly recommend it and am retaking it. It really is no experience required but it is tough. I can provide you with more info and a discount link if you would like. it is two nights a week and lots of office hours. One of the classes actually became a startup.

Hi everyone! Several of you asked me to share the files that I had written to demonstrate some of the material for class 3. Below is the link to the Dropbox folder where I've put all of them. Let me know if you have any questions!

Hi sister Pythonistas--new hackathon coming up, of interest (I think) I wanted to pass along a link to an upcoming hackathon sponsored via the Code for America NYC brigade. It's a civic hackathon sponsored by women (cis and trans) for women (cis and trans). Code for America (and the brigade) are committed to making cities better. They rock. Help them rock harder. http://www.meetup.com/betanyc/events/145903602/

Hi, I just saw this course now and am interested in taking the remaining two classes. Can I drop in tonight and pay for the two remaining classes? I'm okay with catching up with the material. Many thanks! If yes, can you please let me know what the address is? Thanks again.

    Hi folks:

Great to meet everyone this week and learn your favorite holidsay. This is probably basic basic for you, but I have been trying to memorize command line terms, and using Quizlet has helped. Passing it along in case...

Sigh. No problem with SublimeText, no problem with running things from the terminal (I love you, Mac!), but I got into a glitch with creating a directory. I will come a little early and ask for help...

      Hey Bethany and everyone else!

I was super sick on Wednesday and couldn't make class. I went through the class 2 syllabus and think I'm all caught up! Did we learn anything in class that *wasn't* on the Dropbox file?

See you all again next Wednesday!

I also just took a full time position today in the burbs and won't be able to make it on a weekly basis. Is there any way to pass my registration on to someone who is able to go, in the way that Latrice did earlier? I'd love to open it up to someone, and hopefully get my money back organically. Thanks!

    October 23, 2013

    • Kelly

Not sure what "get my money back organically" means.

IE there are no refunds, so anyone who would like to do an in-person transaction could benefit from my sudden employment.

Hi all, if anyone is still interested in taking an open spot, I won't be able to make it to all of the classes. If we could work something out it would be great to get my money back too. Let me know, thanks!

Hi everyone. Do I need to pre-install something on my laptop if I have Windows? Will I be able to follow along? I heard there are Windows-based tools similar to a terminal window on a Mac.

    October 22, 2013

    • Bethany

Hi Anna, You don't need to pre-install anything and you will be able to follow along. I'll be posting the link to the first class outline before tomorrow's class and there are instructions on that.

I'm very interested as well. If anyone can't make it I'd really appreciate getting transferred someones spot! Thanks

When will this class be taught again? I'm on the waitlist, but it doesn't look like any spots are opening up. Please let me know.

Hey, folks, I just accepted a full-time position -- which means I won't be able to take the course at this time. I see you're not offering refunds; is there any way a wait-listed person can take my place and we meet up so I can be reimbursed? Thanks!

Please let me know if space opens up. I need to teach a 30 high school students from the Bronx Python, but I don't know it yet!

Will this be an on-going series? I would love to learn this program next year, Jan 2014 if anyone will be teaching this class at that time.

    October 10, 2013

    • Aurelia M.

We will try to continue with the Python series provided the reception is positive. :)
