JavaScript/JQuery: November section

Javascript is a language that all good web developers must know. Being around since the early 90s it's still the primary way to do client side web development. We will be covering basic Javascript, to the JQuery library, dynamic HTML, to JSON and APIs. Students will exit this class having a good grasp of basic programming principles and the knowledge of how to manipulate html elements.

We suggest having a working knowledge of HTML as a pre-requisite for this course.

This 4-class JavaScript course runs on the following schedule:

Class 1: Intro to JavaScript
Tuesday, November 1 from 7:00 - 9:00pm

Class 2: Intro to JQuery
Tuesday, November 8 from 7:00 - 9:00pm

Class 3: Element Manipulation with JQuery
Tuesday, November 15 from 7:00 - 9:00pm

Class 4: APIs and JSON covering Meetup and Facebook
Tuesday, November 22 from 7:00 - 9:00pm

About the teachers

Sara Chipps is an independent JavaScript developer, early stage startup advisor, and a born programmer. Sara thinks that developing software is glamorous and fun. She also happens to be the cofounder and leader of Girl Develop It. You can see her rants and codes at  http://GirlDeveloper.com

Leo Newball, Jr has had a fascination with technology since he was 11 years old. Since that early age, he immersed himself in the world of technology, often referred to as the stereotypical computer geek in neighborhood and school. Interests became action when, throughout middle school and high school, he taught computer literacy to individuals of all ages, and performed computer consultancy to individuals on a one-to-one basis. His interests always lay with emerging and evolving technology, thus as the Internet became an evolving force, his attention was drawn in its direction.

Sara and Leo were a fantastic team: generous and informed instructors with rich course content, resources, and materials aplenty. Sara is clearly a seasoned, knowledgeable teacher and Leo has everything it takes to make a solo debut! Their shared sensibilities - curiosity, intelligence, and kindness - made the class all the more perfect. Encore please!

Leo and Sarah's tag-team could have used a little more polish, but overall the class was great.

Engaging presentation by Leo and Sara. Intro and slides quickly got my brain wrapped correctly around the bits & pieces that make up javascript. Good info provided for online resources. Enjoyable & diverse group with wide range of experience provided great questions & comments.

Hi Sara and Leo, I'm registered for the class but got stuck at work last night and couldn't make the intro session. Is there anywhere online I could tutor myself a bit so I'm not hopelessly behind next week? Thanks!

@Alisa You could, but it's not highly recommended, I'll have my laptop on hand, and available as a loaner if needed :-)

@Leo @ Sara: I just want to confirm that a laptop and functional brain is all that is required tomorrow. If we were supposed to download or install anything, I missed it. See you tomorrow!

I'm registered for this class. Do I need to bring a laptop? Because I don't have one?

Hey Leo and Sara - I really want to take this class, but I have conflicts on Tuesday nights. Do you think that, in the future, you'll be able to do a section that's on another night of the week? Thanks!

@Chinwe by the time you take this course, you would have gone through basic HTML tags in the HTML course, some of which you will need for the JavaScript in this course. You would have acquired enough knowledge to become introduced to JavaScript, but may need the entire HTML course to become completely comfortable with the foundation of HTML.

Hi! I'm strongly considering registering for this class. I have advanced knowledge of HTML and a working knowledge of Javascript/JQuery, but am very new to JSON and APIs. I'm wondering if this class is for me, or if I should wait for an advanced class? Also, I'm not local and would be traveling from CT. :)

  • Chinwe

Hi, I am registered for the October HTML class and would like to take this class but I see that they overlap so my questions is:
Since this class requires some HTML knowledge, would I have acquired enough knowledge in the HTML class Im already registered for so that I can take this JavaScript course or do I have to wait unitl I complete the whole HTML course
