"Eight Golden Rules of Interface Design" - FCIP April Meetup

An Introduction to Ben Shneiderman's "Eight Golden Rules of Interface Design"
Presenter: Jochen Wolters

Designing user interfaces that are useful, usable, and fun-to-use is a craft that takes years to master. Its fundamental principles, however, can be distilled down to a few rules.

Ben Shneiderman's "Eight Golden Rules of Interface Design" are insightful, easy-to-grasp, and practically oriented. We'll have a closer look at each one of them and review numerous hands-on examples that demonstrate how to apply the Rules to real-world designs.

Regardless of what your involvement is in creating user interfaces, the wisdom of Shneiderman's Golden Rules will help you build more user-friendly and, ultimately, more successful products.

Super meetup. Jochen gave us a very usable prescription for usability. What if we offered to look over each others' new sites as a first cut on usability? Naturally, you would want to focus real tests on real target users - however - would it be valuable to catch the obvious issues? I'm willing.

Enjoyable, very informative, good discussions came out of it. Only thing is that the internal web app I work on violates every rule. But I knew that already. The company just forces the employees to use it

Great presentation and follow-up discussions. It would be interesting to continue the thread with the latest test strategies used to evaluate UIs, including eye-tracking software.

Since this is a crazy-popular topic, and I'm iffy on schedule tonight, I'll give my seat to someone else. John, I'll bribe you with beer for the slides. By the way, I'm go-shopping with my kids. ALL dog shopping sites need UI work!
