Responsive Design
I just returned from An Event Apart, a fabulous web design and development conference (you should go!). The topics were timely and the speakers top notch.
I'll be giving a presentation about the topic I'm most excited about - Responsive Design.
We're in a time of great flux on the web, particularly with regard to the number of devices commonly in use with drastically different screen sizes. Android, iPhone, and Blackberries all have serious web browsers, and all have tiny screens. The iPad has been a major success. Netbooks are booming, and the number of laptop, desktop and external monitor screen resolutions is all over the board.
What's a web designer or developer to do?
Responsive Design is the answer. It's a technique that employs flexible grids, fluid layouts, and most importantly - CSS3 media queries that let you change how things are laid out on the screen depending on the screen size, dynamically. Yep, you can drag the corner of your browser around and have things shift beautifully from a four column layout to a one column layout.
I will demonstrate the code and techniques needed. And I'll even show you how to make it work not only in IE8, but IE7 and even IE6 none of which support CSS3 yet. Srsly.
You'll leave with an understanding of how our design thinking needs to shift, and the coding techniques to make it work in the real world. Don't miss it.
