GOT-OC Hiking to a Trabuco Canyon Waterfall

OK folks, I think it's time we go check out one of the local waterfalls and see if it's still flowing. If not, it's still a fun hike and different from the usual.

Falls Canyon Waterfall is not as well known as Holy Jim Falls, but this one is twice as high at over 40 feet, and a lot easier to get to. Finding directions on the internet is not the easiest of things to get, but I gathered what information I could and went out on an expedition last year and managed to find it. I think It was well worth the effort. There are even rumors of Loch Ness Monsters,  mermaids and mermen in the shallow pool at the base of the falls.

Merman?

IMPORTANT STUFF TO READ--Because actual directions to the hiking area are difficult to convey, we will be meeting in the parking lot of Bigshots Billiards, which is why I have listed Bigshots as the location for this event. From there we will caravan/carpool out to Trabuco Canyon and begin our hike. Those who drive SUVs or otherwise have decent clearance will be encouraged to take a group out there. I drive a Nissan Altima, and I have no problems getting there, anything lower may have problems.

I am estimating that it will be about 3 hours total time from the time we leave Bigshots until we get back. So please be on time and ready to go at 8:30. If you are late, I apologize in advance for leaving you behind.

The actual hike itself will be just under 3 miles. We will be hiking a dirt road for about a mile until we turn off and follow a true trail thru the woods, across a stream a few times, over a couple boulders and fallen trees, and finally arriving at our destination. we will be going out the same way we came in. There is plenty of shade along the trail, not so much on the dirt road.

MORE IMPORTANT STUFF TO READ-- The half mile of so into the falls is a series of rises, falls, and obstacles (nothing too difficult, but this is NOT a graded trail) that takes a little bit of work (you will use your hands to balance or navigate a few times), and it will feel like we went further than 3 miles once it all over.  There is the potential to get scratched up if you are not careful, and there is definitely spots with poison oak. As you can see from the Merman picture, I did wear jeans on the hike. Now that I have done it, I don't think I will wear jeans this next time, but I do advise long pants if you are worried about possibly getting scrapes, scratches, or poison oak.

I am not looking to kill anyone on these hikes - as far as you know. I'm just putting out the information so you can best determine how to dress. This is a fun little hike and it can be done in tennis shoes with no problems.

You do need to bring water and some sun protection. I would suggest you bring some bug spray as well, there are a few areas on the main road that it would be useful if you really hate having a few flying insects buzzing you.

Hope to see you out there exploring The OC with me.

That had to be the most beautiful, best hike so far, by far! I absolutely loved it. The scenery was wonderful. The weather was perfect. The birds and the nature sounds, including the creek and waterfall were phenominal. I can't wait to do this one again! I had a great time, and it was fun having lunch with everyone afterwards. Thanks Lance for all the thought and effort you put in to this for all of us.

Ok, awkward. Yes tweens can come as long as you are confident they can make it. Guess I should have known what that meant since I had a few....

Bonnie- I cap my hikes at 2 guests for a few different reasons. How many guests did you want to bring?

Hi Lance, I went on this hike a couple of months ago with another group and it's absolutely beautiful. I wore regular walking shoes, but don't recommend it, since there were areas that I had to get help climbing rocks. I suggest that people wear hikiking shoes, if they have them. Also, the drive there and back is a little long and quite a bit on a major dirt road with a lot of serious ups and downs. We all got into trucks and SUVs and drove a total of 6 cars. Regular sedans will NOT make the drive. I'm really excited about this hike. :-)

All - the OC triathlon is in the area that day, but does not impact us. I've checked out the road closures and we are good to go.

My Solstice has trouble making it over speed bumps so I'll have to work on getting my Explorer road-worthy. If so, I'll have room for 3 passengers. Stay tuned....
