Let's go sailing and biking!

  • September 30, 2014 · 7:00 PM

I got really, really busy after putting this up.  So busy in fact that I haven't hosted an event for . . . years . . . yikes!

I've fallen into a pattern of just working behind the scenes to help our active assistant organizers host events.  Meanwhile, I've been sailing regularly with Don on his Catamaran 'My Way'.  Occasionally I help him host events.

So I'm going to let this event drop off the front page of the site and I'm going to replace it with another 'placeholder' event description that will try to describe what's happening with the group.

We've now done the first of this type of event. We loaded a couple of bikes into an Olson 25,  docked at the Island, off loaded the bikes and rode along the 'ring roads' of the Island.

Click here to view that event.

This page has no date or time scheduled, it exists to set up a waiting list from which we'll plan the next Sail/Bike/Sail Event. When you add yourself to the waiting list, please answer the questions, and fill out the comment section to add your thoughts to such an event.

On the Inaugural event I chartered an Olson 25 from OCSC Berkeley for the trip. Done this way, the charter cost was $165, and it was shared between three of us. if I were the skipper and we did it on a Weekend.

I built a bike rack that fits the cabin sole of a small boat and accommodate two bicycles in an upright position.

On the Olson 25 it was a snug fit but there was enough room to squeeze past the bikes and work around them in the cabin.  The rack made the bikes very stable and they did not move around while sailing.

An Olson 25 is a small sailboat, so on future events where we use this type of boat, the maximum number of bikes we could carry would be two, and the maximum number of crew would be 4.  Bikes are available for rent on the island so that is an option.

Please email me if you are an assistant organizer with the group and want to try the rack out on your boat or if you'd like to charter another type of boat and use the rack on that.  We figured out that this will not work on a J-24.

This sounds wonderful to me. I know I would be able to bring a guest.

Darn it, I've got a long planned community theatre engagement. Don't miss it Angel Island if you can go.

The next time we do this, I'll email everyone on the waiting list with a suggested date, We'll build the next crew based on who is available.

Done and Done, we completed the first of what I hope will be many events like this on 4/15/2012. The bike rack worked great and B and I had a great circumnavigation of the Island by Bike.

The wind should be mild tomorrow, the skies clear and the temperature mild. It's looking like it will be B and Z and myself for the first event of this type. There is still some more planning I have to do . . . but when the inaugural event occurs, a new event page will be created and this page will remain in place to keep the 'waiting list' alive.

hmm, 'pay' is not quite the right word here. It's what is called a 'Bare Boat Charter' which means the Charter fee is split among those going.

I would be willing to pay $40.

Don't Blink!!! I have a scheduled event in San Jose at 5:30 so that puts a limit on that day. Next weekend is open. I have a heavy street bike, and I am fine with hiking. Since this is my first event what is the timeline look like?

a folding bike would work also. I own only a big fat and heavy mountain bike... (and I love it)

I totally agree, a 'unicyle' could fit nicely in the forepeak :)

I definitely want to bike but I'm not in town until next friday so if you folk want to do it this Sunday, I'll wait for the next session!
Is anyone able to ride an unicycle? I'm not but that would be a good way to have more "bikes" aboard!

Nicole, John and Sonia, I've met all three of you and can see doing this as a crew of 4, honestly, I think the four of us would make a really cool crew. I'd bring my bike, but we could only take one other bike. Who wants to bike and who wants to hike?

Wow, I got responses very quickly! cool. I could do this on Sunday!

I've been dreaming of that exact combination a couple of weeks ago when I was bike-camping on angel Island and I had to take the ferry on beautiful, perfectly sailing days!
I'd love to join. Maybe we can set up a doodle to find a date.
