In brief

7-9 mile loop captures the best of this preserve -- redwoods, creek, chaparral, and great views.

Distance and difficulty:

This 7 - 9 mile loop hike is moderate, due to the elevation changes. You can create shorter out-and-back hikes that are easier. Trailhead elevation is around 400 feet, and the highest (trail) elevation in the park is just over 2000 feet. The featured hike climbs to about 1510 feet, then drops sharply back to the trailhead on steep Harkins Ridge Trail -- total elevation change is about 1400 feet. Unless you really like ascending steep grades, take the hike in the described direction.

Exposure: Mostly shaded, with some sunny stretches.

Trail traffic: Moderate.

Trail surfaces: Dirt trails and fire roads.

Hiking time: 3 1/2 hours.

Season: Nice any time; very pretty in autumn.

HOW TO GET THERE

The preserve's main entrance and the North Ridge Trail trailhead are located on Skyline Boulevard (Highway 35), 4.5 miles south of Highway 92. Parking is available for 30 cars.

For access to the Redwood Trail or Purisima Creek Trail, there is an 11-car parking area at the trailhead 6.5 miles south of Highway 92.

The Preserve's western access point is accessible from Purisima Creek Road. From the Highway 92 and Highway 1 intersection in Half Moon Bay, travel on Highway 1 south approximately 4.3 miles. Turn left on Verde Road. After turning on to Verde Road and traveling 1/4-mile, continue straight to remain on what becomes Purisima Creek Road. (Verde Road splits off to the right.) Travel approximately 3.7 miles on Purisima Creek Road to reach the Preserve. Parking is available for approximately 5 cars.

Here is Winston's direction: drive 92 west(toward half moon bay), turn left to 35, then count on driving about 4.6 miles, the entry is on your right side right after a ranch with a lot of horses.

Is this trail suitable for hiking beginners?

    December 23, 2013

    • Yvonne C.

should be okay if you have a pair of comfy hiking shoes, expecting 3.5 hours of walking, wear 2 pair of socks will help.

    • Lanse

Andrew, have you hiked 8 miles with a decent amount of elevation? if you have, no problem. if you haven't, it will be challenging but doable.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
