Early blooming wildflower trip -- Rancho Cananda del Oro

Half an hour drive south of san jose is this Rancho Cananda del Oro, one of the closest place to watch wildflowers around bay area.

The best bloom is on the Chisnantuk Peak Trail (included in Option 1 and 2), which is deep in the park and requires roughly 8 miles of moderate and occasionally strenuous hiking to see the whole thing. Expect to share trails with equestrians; don't come if you're afraid of horses. :)

Option 1: 13.7 miles, 6 hours,

Option 2: 10.3 miles,  4.5 hours

Option 3: 4.6 miles,  2.5 hours

For someone who are interested in the trail names :)

option 1: TRAILS:  Mayfair Ranch Trail (3.1 mi) > left onto Longwall Canyon Trail (2.0 mi) > right onto Bald Peaks Trail (1.2 mi) > left onto Chisnantuck ( 1.0 mi) > connect to Cottle Trail (1.3 mi) > left onto Javelina Loop (1.1 mi) > left onto Pena Trail (0.6 mi) > connect Vallecito Trail (0.5 mi) > left onto Canada Del Oro Trail (1.1 mi) > right onto Bald Peaks Trail (0.6 mi) > left onto Serpentine Loop Trail (1.7 mi) > back to parking lot

option 2: Mayfair Ranch Trail (3.1 mi) > left onto Longwall Canyon Trail (2.0 mi) > right onto Bald Peaks Trail (1.2 mi) > left onto Chisnantuck ( 1.0 mi) >turn back at rest site > Chisnantuck (1 mi) > Bald Peaks trail (0.8 mi) > Serpentine loop trail (1.2 mi) > back to parking lot

Carpool suggestions:

You can look for carpool around your place or go to trailhead directly. If you want to come to carpool place, please add your name below. And please remember to pay your driver accordingly. (suggest $5 for 4 pp car if from south bay)

I will still encourage people to go to carpool one (Cupertino -- Sears) instead of many other places. Only if you live really far or you already arranged your carpool with someone you familiar and know their arrangement, otherwise, please join carpool one for easier arrangement. Please consider:

(1)which hike option your carpooler will take, and if you are willing to wait for him/her at the trailhead if you finish early.

(2) do you want to join dinner or not? will your carpooler with you for dinner?

(3) as the driver, you will need to send your carpooler back to where you pick him/her up. It will be dark and everyone will be tired after one day hike.

Passengers: it's your responsibility to contact your driver ahead of time, and also show up on time at the carpool place. If you change your plan, please let your driver know tonight!

By the way, everyone replied yes to this trip will be about to edit the poster and add his/her name under each option.

Enjoyed the hike and met new friends...thanks to Nancy and the other event hosts for organizing the trip.

Beautiful park with very diverse plant communities! Still a little early for wildflowers, but earlier bloomers were out - you just need to look for them:). Thanks to Nancy and the other event hosts for organizing such a great hike!

A little bit of everything. Carpool hilarity. Nancy's ankle. Interesting conversations with fun people. Perfect weather. Tasty dinner afterwards.

Springlike weather good for hiking in Rancho. Well planned routes strived to suit people with different paces and distance. I was a little under-prep for option #1 - ~16.5m - hike but it turned out well with the mild weather. More flowers should appear in a few weeks; Ling is definitely a walking encyclopedia for wildflowers and plants in our Bay Area :)

    March 4, 2012

  • Xiangying

Flowers are not at their peak time I guess. But it is nice to relax and enjoy some outdoor activity with a group friends. It was almost a perfect timing that All 3 groups finished roughly at the same time without coordination. Amazing.

everything seems perfect, the sunny weather, the blue sky, the pretty flowers, the golden puppy, the surprising bay view. Only one exception... I hurt my ankle ~ ~ again... maybe another two weeks without hike. ;( ice bagging now...
We finally split into three groups: 17 miles, 13 miles, 10miles. (cause nobody want to take 4mile trail.:) Amazingly, all group got back to parking lot at almost the same time!! I am in the 10miles group, and the last person to get back with my swollen ankle. :( Special thanks to YueChuan for taking the lead of 10miles group after I hurt my ankle; thanks Lin and Gloria for giving me a company. Again, learned a lot of flower names from Lin! Thanks for the knowledge, Lin, that's one of the biggest gain for me today. Cannot wait to see all those beautiful flower pictures :).

We caught up other groups in the parking lot. A quick hike today.

Andy and Xiaofeng, I really do not know why my name appeared in carpool section, hoping it is another Xin Wang....-_-!...... I will not join carpool and will go to trailhead directly. Thanks.

North park is kind out of my way. I will go to carpool one and if there is no space then I will drive myself.

  • Roman C.

Gloria and all others who also feel the pain of email spamming: you may visit http://www.meetup.com/gowest/settings/ and change your email setting. You may uncheck everything except the first item "a new Meetup is announced". Thanks for your patience!

    March 2, 2012

  • Yinni

Gloria, you can come to North Park to join our carpool at 9:10 am or maybe contact Calvin see if he has more spots. Email me~

    March 2, 2012

  • Leo

Charles, you can join us. Noted we are going option 1.

    March 2, 2012

  • Gloria

My email box is getting overwhelmed by all the email notices for comments and detail updates for this hiking. So am I! 7 carpool places?! Must be a record! I think it will be more efficient if there is 1 or 2 carpool location and whoever show up there can arrange the carpool from there. I didn't have time to participate all the frenzy carpool arranging - looks like i have no choice but to drive myself.

    March 2, 2012

  • Calvin L

I hope tomorrow's 13.7 miles trail won't be such a hard task to complete as it is to organize the carpools.....

    March 2, 2012

  • Charles M.

Leo, mind I join your carpool if the spot is still available.
    Thanks ahead. Charles

meetup must be very happy as we have generated so much traffic for the website.

So the colorful carpool assignments are finally done?!! 40 out of 51 comments are about carpool; and the event content was edited 27 times by 14 people. It was fun!!! ... but perhaps we may do it in a more efficient way next time. :p

Kam, I can carpool with you.

    March 2, 2012

  • Kam

Leo, I added some additional info to carpool one. You might want to check it. Nancy, Jj and Jian. Would you like to carpool with me? That will fill my car.

    March 2, 2012

  • Jian Y.

I am new here. How to chose option and carpool location?

    March 2, 2012

  • Andy W.

He never responded to me though.

    March 2, 2012

  • Calvin L

Yinni, Yin...I saw your messages, I would like to combine, but last night Xin Zhong asked me if I could stop by Tully @ 101 on the way to el Rancho. I am waiting for his reply. My car only fits 4. By the way, Andy also offered him somewhere at I-280/CA-87. Anyway, you guys decide where to meet first (nearby by NP?). If I don't have to pick up Xin, I will join you. Thanks.

    March 2, 2012

  • Yinni

Hi Calvin, Yin Sun, seems that currently we don't have more ppl joining for carpool 4 and 5, maybe we can combine the carpool?

    March 2, 2012

  • Leo

I am going option 1. Will be to carpool one, one spot taken by Xiangying, can take 2 more.

Nancy, Kam: I am option 2 for sure. But will confirm tonight if I am going.

    March 2, 2012

  • Andy W.

Xin Zhong, if you can get to somewhere close to I-280/CA-87, We can pick you up from there.

    March 2, 2012

  • Kam

Nancy, JJ are you still (or will you) be taking option 1 or 2 at the carpool 1 location? Lets consolidate down to 1 car if possible and save some gas.

    March 1, 2012

  • Joy

I would like to carpool at Carpool 2(Marina food market), anyone will be there?

    March 1, 2012

  • Yinni

Ling He, I just added your carpool info :)

    March 1, 2012

  • Ling H.

Sorry, I can't figure out how to add my name to the passenger list - will someone please help?

    March 1, 2012

  • Yinni

If the elevation of Option 1 is 1000ft, I'll go for Option 1.

    March 1, 2012

  • Ling H.

I will join carpool six with Yuechuan Li. Thanks!

    March 1, 2012

  • Yuechuan L.

So complicate this time! I will be option 2, not going to check this board so often but you can add yourself to the passenger list if you want to join.

    March 1, 2012

  • Roman C.

I agree with Xiangying, Andy, and Ella: consolidation of carpool locations is a good idea. However, let's respect drivers' choices. Passengers please confirm with drivers for hiking route on Friday.

    March 1, 2012

  • Kam

I'm taking option 2. If you're taking the same route you're more than welcome to carpool with me.

    March 1, 2012

  • Yanming Z.

I would suggest the guys who choose the option 2&3 take the pokers or outdoor toys to have more fun in the park. Then we can sync on the same leaving time. BTW, I will choose option one and join carpool one. Who will be the driver?

    March 1, 2012

  • Xiangying

Those who join carpool probably should check with the driver, and hopefully take the same hiking option. Waiting in parking lot for 2 hours is no fun :-p Maybe we should get rid of Option-3 to make arrangement a bit easier

    2 · March 1, 2012

  • Andy W.

Roman, for me Carpool 1 and trailhead are on the opposite direction. I have to take Stevens Crk Blvd (traffic lights in every 0.1 mile) to Carpool 1 location, wasting me 15+ mins. It doesn't make any sense for me to go there. Thanks.

    March 1, 2012

  • Roman C.

I remember North Park only have street parking which is extremely difficult on weekends. I recommend a place just 1.8 miles from NP: 516 Alder Drive, Milpitas, CA (VTA Park&Ride, from I-880 exit to East Tasman Dr, turn left at the first crossing, then left turn into the parking lot)

    March 1, 2012

  • Calvin L

They all live around the North Park area, so I guess it would be more covenient to assemble there. We still have one more day tomorrow, so other people in need of a ride might pop up...we'll see.

    March 1, 2012

  • Ella L.

I saw Yinni will join your carpool~~ I still think people assemble in one place can make carpool usage maximum, hoho~
