Another great hike with diversity of splendid views, wildflowers and plants. We were very lucky with the great weather, lots of sunshine & nice breeze. Many thanks to the great organization and hiking pals for a fantastic outing :) Oh, in the end, Andy and I missed the path back to the parking lot and appreciated a lot for everyone's patience and concerns for us.

A Natural Sanctuary, A Human Haven
From its thunderous ocean breakers crashing against rocky headlands and expansive sand beaches to its open grasslands, brushy hillsides, and forested ridges, Point Reyes offers visitors over 1500 species of plants and animals to discover. Home to several cultures over thousands of years, the Seashore preserves a tapestry of stories and interactions of people. Point Reyes awaits your exploration.

For that , I will go.

3 MPH is totally doable as I see these attendees are all excellent hikers, and the trails are mostly flat compared to other locations they hiked before :)

Look like the only sulution is to increase hiking speed to 2.5 miles per hours. which is still not so bad.

    April 18, 2012

  • Jian Y.

Total driving distance 210mi, time 5h40min start and end at Sears without going dinner. If we hike 2mi/h as estimated, we need 9 hours to finish 18mi. This is already 14h40m. Start at 7am will finish at 9:40pm WITHOUT any waiting and delay(unlikely). Does it sound we have lots of time for laying on the beach or barn fire?

Updated to 7AM. 45min extra sleep, would that work? :p
There will be 2 additional driving: Palomarin Beach to Drakes Estero trailhead (55min); Drakes Estero trailhead to Limantour Beach (40min). The intention is to cover more interesting places since we are traveling for such a long distance already.Another time consuming thing is, at the end of each trail, it is supposed to be a nice beach, would we want to spend some time once you are on the beach?

    2 · April 18, 2012

  • Yinni

I think it takes 2 hours to drive to the trail head

Question for everybody How much is 2 * 9 = ? It is 18 right? So if we walk at the speed of two miles per hours we can cover 18 miles, right?
So I think if we start hiking around 9:30am we can cover 18 miles and watch sunset at 7:30pm. If take one hours travel to tailhead we shall leave bayarea 8:30am. Any one wants to double check my math?

7:30 may work. Please let me double check carefully with Jenny. The main issue is I along with a few others can not walk as fast as Andy :p

  • Andy W.

    Does 7:30am work for O1?

    April 18, 2012

  • hailong t.

Drakes Estero trail head比April 7的visitor center要多出大约25分钟的车程,从Drakes Estero trail head到 Limantour Beach还要开40分钟

    April 18, 2012

  • Yanming Z.

Agree Andy. In the trip of 26 miles on Apri 7, we met at carpool site at 6:10am and finished at 7:40pm. For the 18miles, I suggest we could meet at 8:30am. The 30miles' team still need get up early.

    April 18, 2012

  • Xiangying

Hi Andy and all, the time is based on a conservative calculation above in the hike plan. Palomarin Beach to Drakes Estero trailhead is 1hour drive. and for many hikers I expect a slow 2-2.5mile/hour speed, plus additional time for sightseeing, taking pics, hanging around beach etc.

    April 18, 2012

  • Andy W.

Why do we need to leave that early... only 18 milesfor O1, at most 7 hours including rest & lunch time... I might drop out since I have trouble getting up...

    April 18, 2012

  • Andy W.

Can I skip dinner? I don't want to drive to SF downtown?
